Dachshunds, often referred to as "wiener dogs" and "sausage dogs" due to their long, thin bodies, are endearing little pups hailing from Germany. A fun fact about them is that they originate from a type of dog bred during the 1500s. Some Dachshunds were even kept in kennels as small as 3” long as a way of keeping them as lapdogs for royalty. They come in three varieties: smooth, wirehaired, and long-haired, with short legs meant for waddling.
No, Dachshunds generally do shed some fur. While there are non-shedding breeds, Dachshunds are not among them. The Dachshund is a medium-sized dog that comes in two varieties shorthaired and wirehaired and both varieties will shed some fur from time to time. While not excessively fluffy or high-maintenance in terms of grooming, these breeds do require regular brushing to minimize shedding, as well as necessary regular vet visits for nail trims, teeth cleaning, and vaccinations.
