Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are known for being playful and loyal pets that are full of character! They were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers and evolved to have long, muscular bodies to help them maneuver through underground tunnels. Dachshunds often come in three different sizes: standard, miniature, and kaninchen. They also come in two coat types smooth and long-haired and many colors, including black and tan, red, chocolate and cream, and dapple.
Allergies with Dachshunds can be managed by properly cleaning and grooming your pup on a regular basis. Make sure to bathe them regularly, especially after going outside as allergens like pollen, dust, and dander can easily become trapped in their fur. Vacuum or sweep the floors regularly and (if possible) leave your pup outside for a certain amount of time each day – this will help to reduce the amount of allergens inside the house. Provide ample outdoor playtime (if possible) since playing outdoors helps the immune system stay strong and fight off allergens.
Your Dachshund should be fed a diet that is specifically designed for small breeds. It should be nutritionally balanced and contain the essential amino acids and fatty acids that your pet needs for overall health and well-being. If possible, look for foods that are high in protein and offer wholesome vegetables and grains as well. A variety of treats are also beneficial as they help keep your dog active and happy. Make sure to read all labels carefully to see if the food is right for your pup's particular size and age.
Before you bring your new Dachshund home, there are a few things you should do to prepare your house. First, you should puppy-proof your home. Move any items that your puppy could potentially chew on, such as cords, shoes, and other household items. Next, create an area where your pup is welcome to explore. Setting up a kennel or providing a bed are both great places for your puppy to call home. Additionally, have some safe chew toys and treats handy.
Dachshunds are often referred to as small dogs, but that doesn't necessarily mean they can't be considered big. Some Dachshunds have been known to reach over 20 pounds definitely much bigger than most lap dogs. As far as height is concerned, Dachshunds can range anywhere from 6-9 inches at the shoulder. Because they are long and low to the ground, they can appear larger than the average small dog. Ultimately, it can depend on a variety of factors such as breed type and diet, so the answer will largely be subjective.
Dachshunds typically do not love to swim, but some individual Dachshunds seem to enjoy it. Generally these smaller breeds do not have a lot of water-resistance and their long body doesn't help their hydrodynamic ability in the water. This does not mean that it is impossible for them to swim, however! With some guidance and patience, many Dachshunds can be taught to love the water. Initially, short supervised swimming sessions and plenty of praise may be necessary to get your Dachshund used to the idea.
Dachshunds have the potential to get along with other pets, provided they are introduced to each other slowly and have their needs met. While they may often appear confrontational with other animals, this is often because they are trying to protect their territory. With proper training, Dachshunds can learn to accept the presence of other animals. That said, it is important to recognize that they may never be totally comfortable.
Yes, Dachshunds are intelligent dogs. This breed is often referred to as “sausage dogs” due to their long and low bodies. But what really sets them apart is their intelligence. They are quick learners and understand commands quite easily. Additionally, they are quite alert and use their sharp ears to search out new sounds. They are also able to remember cues and tasks with impressive fidelity. When provided with a stimulating environment, Dachshunds are known to excel in problem solving and are capable of understanding complex patterns of behavior.
