Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are one of the most interesting dogs around! They were bred in Germany in the early 1800s to hunt badgers and small animals. Another fun fact about these curious dogs is that they come in three varieties: standard, miniature, and kaninchen, with the longest measuring in at 32 inches.
Dachshunds are considered to be moderate shedders, and are not considered to be non-shedding. While the breed does not shed as much as one might expect from a dog with an abundant coat, it is still important to groom them regularly to help contain the loose hairs. With regular brushing and weekly baths during shedding season, you can help to reduce the amount of fur being left around your home and on your clothes. Additionally, be sure to keep up with regular vet appointments so that your Dachshund's coat remains healthy and in great condition.
As a Dachshund owner, your pup's diet will be paramount to its overall health. Many Dachshunds do well on a high-quality commercial dry dog food, but you should discuss that with your veterinarian to ensure it's right for your pup. You can supplement the dry food with canned wet food for added flavor and nutrition, as well as fresh vegetables like green beans, carrots, and bell peppers. Dachshunds have fairly sensitive stomachs, so try to avoid giving table scraps and other people food.
Before bringing your new Dachshund home, make sure that your home is a safe and comfortable environment for them. First, secure loose objects around the house particularly any small items that your new pup could get into. Second, since Dachshunds are prone to back issues, ensure that any steps or jumps are not too tall or too steep for them to navigate safely. Third, prepare a comfortable, welcoming place for them to sleep. Finally, gather all the necessary supplies such as food and water dishes, toys, treats, a collar and lead, and a bed.
Dachshunds are classified as standard and miniature sizes. Standard Dachshunds are typically 16-32 pounds and 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder. Miniature Dachshunds stand up to 5-6 inches at the shoulder and weigh under 11 pounds. The American Kennel Club recommends that mini dachshunds should not exceed 11 pounds. All dachshunds are long and low, standing no taller than 9 inches at the shoulder. Their muscular, long-bodied build gives them the unique shape for which they have been named.
Most Dachshunds enjoy playing in the water and some may even take to swimming. Depending on the Dachshund's individual personality and past experiences, some may even learn to love swimming. The breed's short, broad legs, long body, and large feet were all bred specifically to move more easily through the dense burrows of their indigenous prey. This anatomy does not necessarily make them strong swimmers.
Dachshunds generally do get along with other pets, including cats, when properly trained and socialized. Dachshunds can learn to co-exist in a multi-pet household and even form strong bonds with other friendly animals. However, proper training is essential so that your Dachshund knows how to behave around other pets, including teaching commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'leave it' to prevent him from getting too excited and aggressive.
Training a Dachshund can be rewarding and a great way to bond with your pup. First, it is important to understand their unique personality. Dachshunds are independent and stubborn, so patience is key. Begin with positive reinforcement such as treats or verbal praise when your pup follows a desired behavior. To ensure successful training, keep sessions short and keep your pup motivated by varying your training activities. Always provide plenty of breaks and recognize stress signals. Make sure you remain consistent with your commands and keep the attitude fun and upbeat.
