Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique class of dog, often referred to as a "sausage dog" because of their long slender body that resembles a link of sausage. These little dogs are in the hound group, and are known for their alertness and courageousness. Their playful, inquisitive nature makes them great companions, both indoors and out. Dachshunds come in two varieties short-haired and wire-haired and can be further categorized based on size: Standard, Miniature, and Kaninchenteckel (the Giant variety).
Dachshunds generally don't cause allergies, but it's important to note that no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Some people may be allergic to dog saliva, and as with any pet, there's always the possibility of developing an allergy, regardless of breed. While hair-shedding alone is not usually related to allergies, shedding can cause symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes and a runny nose. If you're already prone to allergies, you should consider getting tested before bringing a dachshund into your home.
When selecting the best dog food for Dachshunds, it is important to consider the nutritional needs of the breed. Dachshunds tend to be active and require an adequate balance of lean proteins, healthy fats, grains, vitamins, and minerals to promote healthy energy levels. But because the breed is prone to weight gain, select a food that is low in calories, taken into consideration the dog’s activity level.
To be an excellent puppy parent for your Dachshund, it's important to develop an understanding of the breed's unique needs, provide socialization and training, establish a daily routine, and establish boundaries. Being prepared is key for success. Familiarize yourself with Dachshunds historically and behaviorally, and find a quality veterinarian that specializes in the breed. Puppies need to be loved and monitored, and should get plenty of regular exercise and meaningful enrichment. Aim to provide your pup with regular meals, as well as lots of positive reinforcement for desired behaviors.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard, which generally measures 16 to 32 pounds and 8 to 9 inches tall; and miniature, which usually weigh 11 pounds or less and is 5 to 6 inches tall at the shoulder. Although weight and height vary by breeding lines, the American Kennel Club standard lists an ideal size of 16 to 32 pounds for a standard Dachshund and 11 pounds or less for a miniature Dachshund.
Dachshunds, also known as sausage dogs, can be a great companion, however swimming may not be their favorite activity. Although some may enjoy it, depending on their disposition and attitude towards water, many Dachshunds are not strong swimmers. As with any breed, it is important to introduce the activity safely and gradually build up confidence in the water. It is not recommended to leave any dog unattended while swimming, as they could tire quickly and become a drowning risk.
Dachshunds can make great family pets, especially when it comes to being around children. Generally friendly and social, these small-sized companions can be great playmates for kids as long as they are properly socialized and trained from a young age. Dachshunds don't require too much exercise, so they're wonderful companions for kids and they typically enjoy the attention they receive from their younger family members. Furthermore, their short coats are easy to keep groomed and the sizes make them a manageable size for younger children.
Training a Dachshund is an individual matter, depending on the breed's needs, age, and temperament. Generally, a minimum of 30 minutes of training per day is recommended. However, longer sessions of 45 minutes to an hour can promote better overall learning and effectiveness of the training sessions. Additionally, shorter training sessions throughout the day that are no more than 10 minutes are recommended for teaching basic skills. This not only helps to keep the Dachshund's attention, but helps to avoid any overload of information or frustration.
