Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an ancient breed of dog and are classified as Scenthounds. Scenthounds were bred to use their exceptionally powerful noses to track and pursue scents over vast tracts of land. Dachshunds share this remarkable skill and are renowned for their exceptional stamina and agility. They typically have longer, strong, muscular necks and frames, with short, strong limbs. The breed's name in German literally translates to ‘badger hound,’ reflecting their original use for hunting.
Dachshunds have a very unique and interesting coat, consisting of short hairs that all lie in the same direction and feel smooth to the touch. These coats also tend to be quite thick, providing ample protection from the weather. Coloration of the Dachshund coats can range from solids (brown, black, cream, etc.) to two tones (black and tan, blue and cream, etc.) and even dapples, though this is much less common.
Dachshunds have a hearty appetite and will eat a variety of foods. A good diet for a Dachshund should include high-quality kibble and wet foods made with wholesome ingredients. The kibble should contain good sources of protein such as chicken, fish, or turkey, as well as healthy carbohydrates and fiber. Additionally, wet foods should contain vegetables and fruits. It is important to supplement their diets with human-grade proteins such as lean meats, cooked eggs, and fish to provide vital nutrients and a balanced diet.
Before bringing your Dachshund to its new home, you should ensure that the area is safe and secure. To start, you should puppy-proof your home by hiding any cables or other hazards, as well as covering any sharp corners with furniture pads. You should also provide plenty of safe spaces and beds for your new pup. Ensure they are comfortable and warm and also provide toys and chew-proof furniture for your pup to use. Establish a routine so that they know when to eat, sleep and go outside for potty breaks.
Dachshunds, also known as sausage dogs, come in two sizes: standard and miniature. Full-grown standard dachshunds range from 16 to 32 pounds, with males typically being in the upper end of that range. Miniature dachshunds fall within the 8-11 pound range. They also have two different coat types--smooth and wirehaired--each type coming in various colors and patterns. Typical dachshunds measure between 8-9 inches tall, whereas miniatures measure between 5-6 inches.
Although many Dachshunds will enjoy taking a dip in the pool or playing around in a lake, swimming is generally not considered an activity they favor, particularly when compared to other canine breeds. Generally, the short legs and deep chest of a Dachshund breed can limit their ability to swim, making them more prone to fatigue due to their unique body type. This makes them more susceptible to drowning or other water-related incidents. The Dachshund's coat also has a heavier, dense fur that can become more prone to absorbing moisture faster than other breeds in the water.
Dachshunds can make for great family dogs, as they are loyal, loving, and highly intelligent. Dachshunds tend to bond with one family member, but also love being part of a larger family. They can be highly affectionate and protective of those they love. Depending on the size and activity level of the dog, they can fit well into busy families as well as quieter ones. They're quite good at adapting to their environment and can make for great companions.
The amount of minutes per day that you need to dedicate to training your dachshunds can vary depending on the breed and your goals. For general obedience, a few sessions of 10-15 minutes a day should be enough. However, more challenging exercises such as agility and tricks can take up to 30 minutes a session, adding up to an hour per day. Establishing a consistent daily routine and setting aside enough time to train appropriately are both important steps to ensure success.
