Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are classified as a hound breed of dogs and they are recognizable by their long and low bodies. Many make the mistake of categorizing them immediately as a small variety of a dog, which is not strictly true. Although the same breed can come in both miniature and standard sizes, the breed itself certainly does not fall under the "toy" or "lapdog" category. Dachshunds are an intelligent, independent and courageous breed, known to be lively, affectionate, and spirited.
While Dachshunds are generally a low-shedding breed, there may be some individual variation and it is important to be aware that all dogs, regardless of breed, shed some hair. Unfortunately, it is not possible to guarantee that any Dachshund will be completely non-shedding, as this is not a trait which is common to the breed as a whole. However, Dachshunds generally shed less than other breeds and they have a very short coat which makes grooming and cleaning easier and helps to reduce the amount of shedding.
Dachshunds are considered to be active dogs with an average life expectancy of 12 to 16 years. To support their active lifestyle, they need a high-quality dry food specifically designed for their breed, which contains protein, important vitamins and minerals, and a moderate amount of fat. Additionally, they enjoy variety in their diet, so some foods that are safe for them to consume include lean cooked meats, boiled eggs, fresh vegetables, fruits, and cooked whole grains like oatmeal.
Before getting a Dachshund, it's important that you're prepared with certain supplies. Stock up on food and water bowls, carrier and leash, a bed, toys, treats, and grooming supplies for your Dachshund. You may want to also get a few blankets and chew resistant items like rope toys for your pup to play with. Additionally, invest in a heartworm preventative and flea/tick prevention, as well as an identification tag and microchip. Finally, make sure you have a vet lined up to ensure your Dachshund is well taken care of!
Dachshunds are considered to be small dogs, usually weighing between 16 and 32 pounds. They are known for their short legs and long body as well as their playful nature and loyalty. Despite their smaller size and stature, Dachshunds can provide lots of love and entertainment to any household. They have lots of energy and spirit, so they can often keep up with their larger canine counterparts, sometimes even exceeding them in the behavior department! Although their size may be small, their love and loyalty is just as big.
Generally, a Dachshund should receive at least 20-30 minutes of exercise per day, which can take the form of a walk, a run, or playtime in the yard. However, it is important to remember that no two Dachshunds are the same and the amount of exercise each one needs may vary depending on things like age and health. Therefore, you should always consult with your vet to determine the best amount of time to walk your pooch.
Dachshunds can be a wonderful companion for children. Their generally friendly nature makes them excellent playmates, plus their low to the ground size is perfect for kids who are just learning about handling the responsibility of owning a pet. Dachshunds also tend to have a longer lifespan than many other breeds, meaning they can be a part of the family for many years. Furthermore, they are known to be quite affectionate which makes them the ideal breed to build a relationship with a child.
Dachshunds are considered small but mighty when it comes to intelligence and character. It's true that many of them may not respond well to basic training, but they have proven to be quick learners in the right environment. They tend to have independent minds and can think for themselves, allowing them to often come up with creative solutions to challenging situations. It is also said that dachshunds are quite cunning, aware of their mischievous antics and always one step ahead of their owners.
