Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are an inquisitive and lively breed of dog. They are intelligent, loyal and fearless and make great pets, but they do require plenty of exercise and attention from their owners. Dachshunds have long bodies and short legs, and come in two sizes: standard and minature. They also come in three coat types: smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. Dachshunds are generally healthy and have an average lifespan of 12-14 years. They can be prone to obesity, so owners should take responsibility for their dog's diet.
Dachshunds have a mottled coat that can range from short and hard to long and silky, depending on the variety. Most have an outer coat that sheds, but some non-shedding varieties have been bred from a combination of different breeds. These can have a dense, cashmere-like coat and may require minimal grooming and be hypoallergenic. Generally, the coat is short and smooth on the top with long hair on the belly, ears, and legs with shorter legs.
Dachshunds should not be fed human foods as their dietary needs are different from those of humans. Additionally, they may beg for certain foods, but unfortunately these can be quite unhealthy for them. Chocolate, grapes, and onions can all be toxic to Dachshunds, as can fatty foods, drinks like caffeine and alcohol, and anything with old or moldy ingredients. They should also not be fed raw hide bones, as they can quickly splinter and cause internal problems.
Every home should be prepared to welcome a new Dachshund into the family. To get your home ready, start by making sure your home is safe for the pooch. You'll need to secure all hazardous items or put them away, as even the smallest items can be hazardous. Once the home has been cleared of potential hazards, you should also baby-proof any furniture you'll let them climb or jump on. Next, fill the house with dog-friendly items like beds and toys.
While their small stature may make them appear smaller, Dachshunds are often considered medium dogs. Though there is no exact definition of a "big dog," in general terms larger breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Saint Bernards and Labrador Retrievers commonly fit this description. That being said, Dachshunds are certainly not among the largest of breeds, so they are typically not referred to as big dogs. Instead, due to their unique body shape and size, they are classified as an easily trainable diminutive breed.
Dachshunds are not known to particularly enjoy swimming, however some may take to it. Many Dachshunds do not like getting their sensitive ears wet, and this can make them uncomfortable when in the water. Since Dachshunds are quite short, their little legs may tire quickly if they are trying to stay afloat. Additionally, many Dachshunds have a thicker coat which makes them even more prone to getting cold and tired in the water.
Generally, Dachshunds do well with kids. That said, there is always a chance that they may not be the best fit for your family if you are looking for a pet that will be devoted to children, as they are more often than not a one person breed. However, they are very intelligent and can be trained and socialized to do well with kids if everyone in the house is consistent with their care. With proper socialization and structure, many Dachshunds can learn to get along well with children.
Absolutely! Dachshunds are a highly intelligent breed; they're often referred to as "sausage dogs" because of their elongated shape and feisty, playful personality. Dachshunds are naturally curious animals, which allows them to quickly recognize new faces and familiarize themselves with their home. Their impressive level of intelligence also makes them quite easy to train, and they can learn a wide range of commands and tricks with a little bit of patience and consistency.
