Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a lively, loyal, and adventurous breed of dog that can make a great addition to your family. They are known for having a strong sense of smell and determination so they make excellent hunters, but they still possess the loyalty and loving nature that all dogs possess. While they often have strong personalities, Dachshunds crave attention and love to cuddle and be close to their owners. They have short legs and long bodies so their energy levels can be high, and they often require a fair amount of exercise.
Dachshunds do not necessarily cause allergies, but they can trigger allergies in people who are sensitive. A study published in 2011 by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology found that exposure to Dachshunds, as well as other dogs, can trigger the release of histamines in people with pet allergies. So it is possible for someone to be allergic to Dachshunds, although there is no guarantee one way or the other. It is recommended that anyone considering getting a Dachshund be tested for pet allergies first to be sure.
Dachshunds will usually eat a variety of different food items, depending on their age, weight, activity level, and other factors. Typically, they should eat a kibble-based diet that is specifically designed for their breed with a proper balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and minerals. For an extra nutritional boost, you may also opt to supplement their kibble-based meals with some fresh fruits and veggies.
Before bringing your Dachshund home, it's important to create a safe, comfortable environment for them. A few steps you can take include purchasing food and water dishes, purchasing a durable collar and leash, providing them with several toys, and setting up a bed for them in an area that is quiet, such as your bedroom or living room. Be sure to inspect your home for places they could get stuck, such as holes in walls, and secure any toxic plants or chemicals that may be dangerous.
Dachshunds come in two sizes standard and miniature. The standard size stands between 16 and 32 inches high, whereas the miniature size stands at 11 inches or less. Generally, the miniature size is also referred to as "tweenie" or "toy". As a rule of thumb, the standard size is best suited for larger households or households with children, while the miniature makes an excellent companion for singles or couples with limited living space. Both sizes are available in a variety of colors and coat types.
The amount of daily exercise you should give your Dachshund is dependent on its age, size, and overall health. Generally speaking, an adult dog should have at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day, and this can include walking, running, and playing. For a Dachshund, it is best to combine occasional intense activity with longer, more leisurely walks.
Generally, Dachshunds get along well with other pets in the home, such as cats, if proper introductions and training are provided. Dachshunds are known to be intelligent and adaptable dogs, and, in the presence of other animals, they need to know that they are not threatened. The best way for this to be done is by having your Dachshund participate in early exposure and socialization with other animals. Additionally, displaying positive reinforcements when your pet interacts nicely with other animals can help.
Whether training a Dachshund is easy or difficult depends largely on the individual dog and the training approach used. Some Dachshunds may be particularly eager to learn, taking to commands with ease and even excelling in obedience training. Others may be more independent and less eager to learn, making it harder to train them for basic commands. The best way to ensure your Dachshund has a positive learning experience is to use reward-based positive reinforcement training, keeping sessions short and using food treats or verbal praise and reinforcement for desired behaviors.
