Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a small breed of dog that originally come from Germany and are part of the Hound group of dogs. They are a lovable and spunky breed of dog that are recognizable from their short legs, long bodies, and pointed ears. They come in all sorts of colors and coat types including Smooth (short hair) and Wirehaired (longer hair). Although they are considered a toy dog, they were originally bred to hunt, and can be quite tenacious when their prey is spotted.
It is possible that a Dachshund could cause someone to have allergies, but it is generally not the breed that is the cause. Instead, it is often the allergens that the Dachshund carries in its fur and on its skin such as pollen, dust mites, and dander that could trigger a reaction. For people with known allergies, it is a good idea to keep your Dachshund indoors to reduce the number of allergens that it picks up from outside living conditions.
Dachshunds have unique dietary requirements that should not be ignored, so it's important to avoid feeding them certain foods. Grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, raw meat, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are particularly hazardous and should be kept far away from these sensitive pups. Other snacks that may cause gastrointestinal upset include raw, fatty, or salty foods, as well as moldy, spoiled, or unbalanced items.
Before you bring a Dachshund into your home, it is important to have all the things they need to be happy and healthy. Essential items include a comfortable bed where they can rest, ceramic food and water bowls, collars, leashes, a quality all-purpose dog food, good grooming items, interactive toys, chew toys, dental chews, appropriate doggy door, a reliable kennel that will keep your Dachshund safe when unsupervised, and dog training treats.
Dachshunds vary in size depending on their breed there's a standard size, a miniature size, and a kaninchen (rabbit) size. The standard dachshund, also known as a long-haired dachshund, will generally weigh between 16-32 pounds and measure 8-9 inches in height at the shoulder. The miniature dachshund, sometimes known as a short-haired dachshund, weighs between 11-15 pounds and can measure anywhere between 5-6 inches in height.
Generally speaking, an adult Dachshund should get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. Though some Dachshunds, depending on their age, activity level, and health, may need as much as 60 minutes. It's best to consult with your veterinarian to determine the most appropriate amount. Additionally, you should consider your Dachshund's energy level—not all Dachshunds will need the same amount of physical activity. If your Dachshund seems especially energetic, you might consider increasing the number of minutes you walk them.
Dachshunds are generally friendly and get along well with other pets, as long as proper introductions are made. However, like any other dog breed, it depends on the individual dog's personality and the relationship between all the animals. Most Dachshunds are very social, active, and curious, so when introducing them to another pet, make sure to supervise the interactions. It's important to introduce the pets slowly and to choose calm, socialized animals to be around the Dachshund.
Training a Dachshund is best done through reward-based positive reinforcement. To get started, contact a local dog trainer or take a class together in order to learn ideal handling techniques. You'll want to be sure to use small, tasty treats to reward the dog when they perform behaviors such as sitting, lying down, rolling over, and so on. Make the rewards consistent and positive. Cut treats into small pieces in order to prevent overfeeding. When Dachshunds learn commands, be sure to use the same words consistently over time.
