Because they have such short legs, they can actually dig and fit into burrows or openings, making them great for catching small animals like rabbits that would otherwise be inaccessible. Dachshunds are distinguished by their characteristic short-legged, long-bodied shape and coat. Their coats come in a variety of colors and styles. A short-haired dachshund has a soft, shorthaired coat that is thick and glossy, while a wire-haired dachshund has a coarse, wiry topcoat and a dense undercoat. A long-haired dachshund has a long, smooth coat that may have a slight wave and require regular grooming.
Dachshunds are omnivores that tend to have an appetite for a variety of foods. Dachshunds need a moderate level of exercise on a daily basis. A regular walk each day will keep them healthy and fit, but they also enjoy other activities like running in the yard or playing with a tug-of-war toy. Depending on their age and health, Dachshunds may need more exercise than other breeds to stay in shape. According to the American Kennel Club, they do best when they get about 30 to 45 minutes of exercise per day, which should include playtime and stimulating activities like a game of fetch.
Dachshunds can get along with children very well, if given the right amount of socialization, patient and consistent training, and plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. It should be noted that they are high energy dogs, so they may have more energy than a small child in the house and need an outlet for it, such as daily walks and interactive playtime.
