Questions & Answers
Dachshunds, also known as "Wiener Dogs" or "Sausage Dogs," are thought to have originated in Germany in the 1500s. They are popular for their loyal, loving nature and playful attitude. Some fun facts about Dachshunds are that they come in two varieties, standard and miniature, and three coat types, wirehaired, smooth and longhaired. Dachshunds have very keen noses and sometimes are used for truffle hunting.
Dachshunds have a short, smooth coat or a long, wiry coat. Their coats come in various colors including black, tan, cream, brindle, red, shades of gray, or blue. The coat of the long-haired variant is typically longer under the neck and behind the ears than it is on the body and legs. It’s not uncommon for the wiry-coated variety to have a beard and eyebrows. The fur is usually thick and does not tangle easily, which reduces grooming time.
Dachshunds should not be fed any type of candy, chocolate, or human food that contains large amounts of sugar, as these can lead to long-term health issues. Bones, rawhide, and other chew toys should also be avoided due to potential choking hazards. Additionally, small pieces of food that could be a choking hazard should be kept away from the dog. Many types of fruits and vegetables are high in sugar content and should also be avoided.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Dachshund requires commitment, consistency, and patience. Start by talking with a veterinarian to ensure that your pup is receiving the proper health care and nutrition. A Dachshund can be prone to obesity, so you should monitor their diet and keep them active with regular playtime and walks. Socialize your pup early, introducing them to people and other animals as frequently as possible in order to help them develop confidence and strong social skills.
Dachshunds come in three main sizes – standard, miniature, and kaninchen (rabbit). Standard Dachshunds weigh around 16-32 pounds and stand 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder, while miniature Dachshunds are smaller, weighing 11 pounds or less and standing 5-6 inches tall. Kaninchen (rabbit size) Dachshunds are even smaller, weighing 7 pounds or less and standing 4-5 inches tall.
Every dog is different, but as a general guideline, most Dachshunds need to get at least 35-40 minutes of regular, moderate exercise per day. This can include a combination of the two, such as a 20-minute walk and 20 minutes of indoor play or even two 10-minute walks. Just make sure your pup's daily activity is spread throughout the day. Additionally, try to mix up your walks so that your pup stays interested. Take them to a few different parks, or head out for a longer, slower walk versus a shorter, more intense one.
Yes, Dachshunds can make wonderful family pets and are usually very good with kids. They tend to form very close bonds with children and can make great playmates as they are intelligent and love to play interactive games. Dachshunds are naturally suited to households with children as they love to be cuddled and showered with affection. These friendly, outgoing dogs can even be taught to fetch and play dress up.
Dachshunds are known for being a highly intelligent breed of dog. They have remarkable problem-solving skills and are surprisingly cunning at times. With the right training, they are capable of remembering and understanding complex commands very quickly. Furthermore, they can easily be trained to perform a variety of tasks such as retrieving, running agility courses and more. They are eager to please, so with consistent reinforcement, they can become obedient and reliable companions. Their loyalty and intelligence make them an excellent family pet and watch dog for many owners.
