Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a small breed of hound dogs that are up to nine inches tall and weigh up to 32 pounds. These long, low-slung dogs originated in Germany in the 1500s. While they are friendly and loyal dogs, they do tend to be more temperamental than some other breeds, requiring additional training and socialization at an early age. They are very active and make great companions for outdoor activities. They are intelligent and determined but are also known to be independent and can be stubborn at times.
Dachshunds are not considered a hypoallergenic breed. While the breed has a low-shedding coat, they have been known to produce allergens that affect certain individuals. While dander, which is shed by most animals and a common allergy trigger, may be minimal, dachshunds do secrete oils and saliva that can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you have sensitivities to pet allergies, it is best to consult with your doctor before bringing any new pet into your home.
Dachshunds should not be fed chocolate, caffeine, or alcohol, as these substances can be dangerous or even lethal to dogs in any breed. Foods with a high fat content, such as processed or cooked fats, should also be avoided for the same reason. Additionally, human food such as avocado, raisins, garlic, and grapes can be toxic to dachshunds, so they should also stay off the menu no matter how much your pup begs for them.
Before getting a Dachshund, it's important to have the right supplies in order to ensure that your pup is comfortable and safe. Some items you should have on hand include a sturdy leash and collar, plenty of food and water bowls, a pet toothbrush and toothpaste, a good quality and comfortable bed, and some toys to keep them entertained. Additionally, it's important to pick up essentials like a brush to keep their coat healthy and grooming tools like clippers for cutting their nails.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: 'standard' and 'miniature'. The standard size is usually around 16-32 lbs and typically has a back length of 16-32 inches. The miniature size typically weighs less than 11 lbs and has a back length of 8-11 inches. It's important to note that there are also different varieties of Dachshunds; some have smooth coats, others have long coats and wire coats. Each variety may also be bred to different sizes.
The recommended amount of walking for a Dachshund depends on its age, size, and overall health. Generally speaking, an adult Dachshund should be walked for at least 20-30 minutes per day, at least twice a day. Puppies should also get some daily exercise, but because they tire easily, it is best to keep their walks short and frequent. Also, because of their sensitive back and joint issues, it is best to keep them on flat terrain and avoid running. Varying the terrain, letting them explore, and hiding treats can help keep the walk interesting.
Generally, Dachshunds get along well with other animals provided they are adequately socialized when they are puppies. If introduced to other animals they don't know at an early age, chances are they will grow up comfortable interacting with a variety of pets without fear or aggression. Proper socialization, lots of patience, and plenty of vigorous playtime with other animals are important components for a mature Dachshund to get along with numerous pets.
There is not an exact answer for how many minutes per day you need to train your Dachshunds; it varies depending on the individual dog's personality, age, and breed. However, in general, you should set aside at least 30 minutes a day for training. This could include playtime and structured learning activities. While 30 minutes is the minimum, longer sessions may be beneficial for your pup and you should adjust accordingly based on your dog's progress and overall health.
