A Dachshund is a unique breed of dog that originated in Germany. It's playful, brave, and loyal, making it a great companion. These low-slung, long-bodied dogs are usually short-legged and have a very distinctive shape. Dachshunds come in 3 coat varieties (smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired), as well as multiple color combinations, so there's a wide variety of looks to choose from.
Dachshunds are not considered to be hypoallergenic dogs. While this breed is usually low-shedding, they are still prone to the same common allergens as all other breeds. People with allergies should take note of this when considering buying or adopting a Dachshund. While the hairs of this breed may not be as prolific as other dog breeds, their saliva and skin cells can still cause reactions in those who are sensitive to pet allergens.
A Dachshund should be fed a diet that is high in protein and moderate in fat with a limited number of carbohydrates. Dachshunds, also known as "Dashound" or "Weiner-Dog," come in two standard sizes: Standard and Miniature. The Standard size weighs in at 16-32 pounds, while the Miniature is 11 pounds and under. In addition, there is a third, much rarer size a "Tweenie" which weighs anywhere between 11 to 16 pounds.
