Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are certainly unique! Not only are they one of the most recognizable dog breeds, they're also full of interesting characteristics. For instance, they come in two sizes: standard and miniature. On top of that, their tails vary in length. Dachshund coats consist of smooth-haired, wire-haired and long-haired varieties. Although they originated as hunting dogs, Dachshunds are friendly and affectionate. They are also loyal and can learn tricks easily. Plus, they're fearless when it comes to defending their home and family.
An effective way to manage allergies with Dachshunds is to create an allergen-free environment in your home. Start by completely removing the source of the allergen, such as switching out carpeting or furniture, and replacing it with hardwood or vinyl floors and leather or microfiber furniture. Making sure to use a HEPA air filter in your home can also help significantly reduce airborne allergens. Additionally, you can regularly bathe your Dachshund in hypoallergenic shampoo that’s specifically designed to reduce allergens in their coat.
Dachshunds typically eat a diet made up of premium, high-quality kibble full of essential vitamins and minerals. If you choose to give your Dachshund wet food or canned food, look for specific meals that are designed for their small bodies. Dachshunds should never eat too much table food, as it can cause digestive issues, obesity, and other health problems.
Before getting a Dachshund, some essentials you should buy include a collar and leash, food and water dishes, ID tags, canine toothbrush and toothpaste, a crate with a bed, chew toys, regular grooming supplies (shampoo, brush, etc), heart worm medication, and a pet first-aid kit. Additionally, you may want to consider buying a baby gate, chew deterrent spray, and possibly puppy-proofing your living space, since Dachshunds tend to be mischievous at times.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on many factors, such as the parents' size, gender, and health. Generally, most Dachshunds mature to a size range between 16-32 cm (6-12 inches) in length and 5-15 kg (11-33 pounds) in weight, but this can vary significantly from individual to individual. To get a better idea of what size your Dachshund puppy will grow to, research the parent sizes as well as potential growth trajectories for Dachshunds within the breed.
Dachshunds generally do not enjoy swimming due to their heavy build and short legs. While some Dachshunds may take occasional dips in the water, many will be reluctant to get wet and stay away from being submerged in water. Though swimming is not a preferred activity for the breed, some Dachshunds may take to it, especially if introduced and trained during their early life.
Dachshunds can certainly make a wonderful choice for first-time dog owners. They are generally good-natured and loving companion animals that require relatively low amounts of exercise and grooming, making them ideal for those who may lack the time or resources needed for a larger breed. Additionally, Dachshunds are highly intelligent and can learn basic commands and tricks if trained properly. With socialization and consistency, Dachshunds can make loyal teammates and trust-worthy guardians for you and your family. Their compact size also makes them a great fit for apartments or smaller homes.
The amount of time needed to properly train Dachshunds each day will vary depending upon their age, temperament, and the goals you have for them. Generally, however, it is recommended that you devote at least 15 minutes to training your Dachshund each day. If you are working to address specific obedience issues, then you may need to increase that time and strive to train with your pet for 30 minutes per day. Even with regular, consistent training, you may find that your pup needs reinforcement as often as once a day, or as little as once every few days.
