Questions & Answers
Though typically known for their long bodies and short legs, Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt small animals like badgers and rabbits. These dogs have amazing stamina and can track prey for miles. They're also incredibly intelligent and easy to train. Even more interesting is the fact that Dachshunds come in a variety of different sizes and coat lengths. The short-haired variety is known as the Smooth Dachshund and the wiry-haired is called the Wirehaired Dachshund.
Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic dogs. Although they do have a short coat which may help minimize the risk for those with allergies, they do shed on a regular basis which can contribute to the spread of dander. For this reason, it is not recommended to keep a Dachshund if someone in the household has a strong allergy to dogs. It is important to note that the shedding and dander that comes with owning a Dachshund can be minimized with proper grooming and regular vacuuming.
Dachshunds generally thrive on a balanced, quality diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level. As with anything, individual dachshunds can have different dietary needs. Due to their longer bodies and shorter legs, they are more prone to some health issues, so making sure they are eating a proper diet is essential for their soundness and longevity. Oftentimes, it is beneficial to provide added glucosamine and chondroitin for joint and bone support.
Before getting a Dachshund, you should ensure that you have all the essentials to properly care for your furry friend. First and foremost, a leash and collar are both necessary for taking your pet outdoors and during walks. Additionally, a bed, toys, and food/water dishes are all must-haves for tending to your pup. You'll also want to purchase an adequate supply of food and treats. Grooming equipment like a brush, comb, nail clippers, and toothbrush are also important.
As a Dachshund breed, there is no one answer as to how big your puppy will get. The size of your puppy can depend on its sex, its parents' size, as well as the gene pool inherited from prior generations. Females may not grow to be as big as males, and vice versa. Generally, Dachshunds are classified as very small to small dogs, standing from 6 to 9 inches tall and weighing up to 11 pounds.
The amount of minutes per day recommended for walking a Dachshund depends on their age, size, and energy level. Generally, adult Dachshunds with moderate energy levels need 30 minutes per day, while puppies and older Dachshunds may not need as much. However, if your Dachshund is on the larger side or has an abundance of energy, they may need up to an hour of exercise per day. When it comes to walking your Dachshund, it's best to aim for somewhere between 15 and 60 minutes per day.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds can get along great with kids. They are often quite loving and affectionate and tend to form close bonds with family members of all ages. In addition, Dachshunds are generally calm and even-tempered, which makes them excellent playmates for children. However, as with all breeds, it's important to provide proper and consistent socialization from a young age. With patience, gentle guidance, and lots of love, Dachshunds can transition into a pleasant and loyal companion for any family home.
Training a Dachshund can be different from other dogs since they're known to be very independent animals. The best way to successfully train a Dachshund is to make the training sessions fun and rewarding. Start the sessions with an emphasis on positive reinforcement such as treats or praises. Be sure to break up the training into several shorter sessions throughout the day in order to keep your dog's attention and ensure it is progressing. Also, practice commands with repetition and consistency so your pup can become used to the expected behavior.
