Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are intelligent, loyal, and active dogs that make wonderful companions. They are also small in stature and can be a great choice for those who live in smaller spaces. Dachshunds can be stubborn and require patience during training. They were historically bred to hunt small animals and as such have an instinctive digging and barking behavior which can be difficult to control. It's important to provide plenty of regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep them content and avoid destructive behaviors.
Dachshunds have two standard coat types: Smooth and Longhaired. The Smooth Dachshund has a short, shiny, smooth coat that is smartly groomed. The Longhaired Dachshund has a coat that is long and straight or slightly wavy with feathering on the legs, chest, and ears. The Longhaired coat requires regular combing and brushing to keep it from matting. Both coat types also come in a variety of colors and patterns including black and tan, red, brindle, cream, chocolate, dapple, and sable.
Yes, Dachshunds do have special dietary needs due to their unique anatomy. As a deep-chested breed, Dachshunds are prone to a condition called Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus Syndrome, colloquially known as ‘bloat’. To reduce their risk of bloat, it is important to provide them with meals tailored to their breed. Feeding smaller meals multiple times a day is ideal, as this will give the stomach smaller quantities of food to digest which puts less strain on their body.
Becoming the best puppy parent for a Dachshund begins with an understanding of the breed. Knowing the traits of a Dachshund and their unique temperament is key to successful parenting. Additionally, having the right materials, such as appropriate bedding, food, and toys, is important. Making sure its exercise needs are met is also critical, as Dachshunds can easily become overweight if not kept active. Finally, providing plenty of love, affection, and positive reinforcement is key to helping your puppy adjust and form a strong bond with its new family.
Dachshunds are typically considered a small breed of dog, but compared to other breeds their size can vary greatly. Depending on the dachshund’s size and type, they can range from 5 lbs up to 32 lbs. Generally speaking, most dachshunds are considered smaller to medium-sized dogs, but some of the larger dachshunds can be considered medium-large or even considered by some to be big dogs.
Dachshunds may appear small and cuddly, but they are surprisingly active dogs. Whether they are playing in the yard, going for a walk, or chasing a toy, these dogs love to move. They do not require a lot of exercise when compared to larger dog breeds, but they still benefit from regular physical activity, both for physical and mental well-being. Additionally, given their intelligence and energy level, activities such as obedience training and agility courses can provide great stimulation and entertainment. Ultimately, they need daily activities to keep their minds and bodies active.
Dachshunds are considered to be relatively amiable around other pets. However, they can be territorial and possessive of their owner's attention, so it is important to provide them with proper socialization at an early age. With that being said, Dachshunds can be socialized to get along with cats, other dogs, and even small farm animals. A good rule of thumb is to ensure they are well-exercised and receive ample human interaction, so they don't turn to aggressive behavior to express themselves.
Training a Dachshund typically requires a commitment of at least 10 to 15 minutes a day. Depending on the Dachshund's level of experience and the desired behavior being trained, that time may need to be increased. As with any dog, you should start slowly five minutes at a time and be consistent. To ensure progress, it's important to remain patient and persevering. As your Dachshund learns, challenge them with more advanced skills and be sure to provide plenty of positive reinforcement when they get it right.
