Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are small but hearty dogs that were bred in Germany in the early 1800s. The word “Dachshund” comes from the German words for “badger” and “hound”. When we refer to “wiener dogs” or “hotdogs”, we’re actually talking about Dachshunds! They come in three varieties wirehaired, longhaired and shorthaired. Their coats can be black, tan, red or cream.
Dachshunds are not considered hypoallergenic dogs. They have a coat that sheds and contains allergens, which can be problematic for those who suffer from allergies. While they shed less than some other breeds, their fur still contains allergens, which may still trigger an allergic reaction. It is possible to reduce the allergen levels in the home by brushing your dachshund regularly and keeping them groomed and well-maintained.
Dachshunds should not have any kind of chocolate, as this contains theobromine which is toxic for dogs. Grapes, raisins, onions, garlic and most artificial sweeteners can also be harmful, as can raw eggs; cooked, lean meat is the best choice. These dogs should never be given uncooked bones, as they can splinter and cause blockage of the digestive system. High fat turkey skin should also be avoided, as this can cause pancreatitis.
Preparing for a new Dachshund can seem daunting at first, but there are a few steps you can take to ensure a smooth transition for you and your new pet. First, make sure to establish a routine that your Dachshund can get used to. This includes things like feeding, walking, and playing at consistent times throughout the day. You should also make sure to talk to your vet about vaccinations and other health matters related to your new pet. Additionally, you should start researching breeds and behavior so that you can better understand your Dachshund's needs.
Dachshunds are not typically considered big dogs, as they normally stay quite small. While standard Dachshunds tend to be around 16-32 pounds, miniature Dachshunds usually only reach up to about 11 pounds. Despite their size, they can be great companions and even make good watch dogs. They make great family pets and are very loyal and playful. They do require consistent attention and affection, since they are prone to separation anxiety.
It depends on the Dachshund; some may enjoy swimming while others may not be as fond of being in the water. Dachshunds have short legs and a long body that can make it difficult for them to stay afloat, so for safety reasons, it is important to ensure the water they are swimming in is shallow enough for them to wade or paddle in. Age and physical condition also play a factor in whether a Dachshund will enjoy swimming.
Dachshunds are generally friendly toward other pets and can be taught to get along with them. However, as with many breeds, Dachshunds may need to be socialized and trained to get along with other animals. With proper introduction and lots of supervision, and depending on the personality of the individual dog, Dachshunds typically get along well with other pets such as cats, birds, and even most farm animals. It is important to introduce new animals slowly, and supervision is always recommended until both animals are comfortable with each other.
Dachshunds are indeed smart and confident dogs. They have a strong sense of independence and a great capacity to learn and to figure out tasks and figure out how to accomplish them. On average, Dachshunds rank well in intelligence tests, being both obedient and capable of solving complex problems. They are capable of learning quickly; however, due to their independent and stubborn nature, they may require more patience and training than other breeds. Dachshunds are also very loyal and affectionate companions who have a strong bond with their owners.
