Dachshunds, commonly referred to as "wiener dogs," are an instantly recognizable breed of small hounds. Not only are they adorable, but dachshunds also have some pretty interesting facts associated with them. For one, they were originally bred to find and dig out badgers in Germany, where the breed originated. While their small size means they can't do this work now, they still have an uncanny smell that can help to search for and flush out small animals like rabbits.
Unfortunately, Dachshunds are not non-shedding dogs. As a breed, Dachshunds are known for moderate to heavy shedding, some occasional depending on the time of year. Though they may have a low maintenance coat, they do need to be brushed and groomed regularly to keep their coats healthy and tangle free. You can minimize the amount of fur they're likely to shed by providing them with a healthy diet, supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, and regular grooming and bathing.
With an underlying tendency towards obesity and certain health conditions that can be exacerbated by obesity, Dachshunds should not be fed anything that is high in fat and sugar. They are a breed that can’t resist such treats, so owners should be particularly mindful when providing their Dachshund with meals or snacks.
