As far as size goes, Dachshunds come in three varieties: standard, miniature, and kaninchen (rabbit-size). Although small, they have big personalities and love to explore -care should be taken in ensuring they don't wander too far from home. Training a Dachshund can take patience at times, as they can be rather stubborn, but consistency and rewards will usually bring good results.
Dachshunds have 3 types of coats: short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired. Short-haired Dachshunds have a smooth, shiny coat with no undercoat while long-haired Dachshunds have a coat that usually reaches the ground and is thick and soft. Wire-haired Dachshunds have a double coat with a coarse, wiry outer coat and soft, dense undercoat. All 3 coat types require regular brushing to look and feel their best.
Dachshunds need a nutritious diet that is high in protein and low in fat. This breed commonly enjoys a meal plan of dry kibble, but it’s important to read all labels carefully and consult your veterinarian when selecting a brand.
