Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are members of the Hound Group in the American Kennel Club's canine hierarchy. In the Hound group, Dachshunds are classified as a "scent hound" and are short, long-backed, burrow-hunting dogs with unique features and personalities. They can come in many different colors, patterns, and sizes and are very popular in the United States, United Kingdom, and other countries. While they were originally bred for hunting, they have been crossbred to become suitable for many different family settings.
As Dachshunds are a member of the non-shedding, hypoallergenic group of dogs, they can be a great choice for those with allergy issues. To manage allergies with Dachshunds, there are some steps that can be taken to ensure the best possible outcome. Firstly, ensure that all your Dachshunds' UTDs (vaccinations, worming, flea and tick treatments) are up to date to reduce the chances of contact with other animals which may be carrying allergens.
Dachshunds are often referred to as "hot dogs" due to their extended bodies, but their dietary needs are quite different. High-quality dog food is the best option for these pups, as much of the food should be high in protein. You can also supplement this with fruits, vegetables, and small amounts of cooked meat together with other goodies like yogurt, low-fat cheese, boiled eggs, small amounts of cottage cheese, and cooked, skinless chicken or fish. Just make sure the treats don't exceed 10% of their daily caloric needs.
Before getting a Dachshund, you should make sure you have all the necessary essentials. You should purchase a collar or harness that is secure and comfortable, along with an appropriate leash. Also, think about getting a doggie bed so your pup has its own comfortable and safe space. You should also pick up a few chew toys to help it channel its energy and possibly deter it from chewing on furniture. Food and water dishes are important to keep handy, and as far as grooming, a quality brush, nail clipper and toothbrush would serve important maintenance tasks.
Dachshunds come in two different sizes: standard and miniature. The standard size dachshund is typically around 8-9 inches tall at the shoulder and 16-32 pounds, while miniature dachshunds are typically about 5-6 inches tall at the shoulder and 11 pounds or less. Depending on the breed, age, and genetics, there can be variations in overall size within these two categories.
Dachshunds were originally bred as hunting dogs, and so have an instinct to chase prey into water. It is not uncommon for owners to describe their Dachshund as taking an enthusiastic plunge into a pool or pond. Although they may take to the water, owners should be aware that their Dachshund may tire easily and should not be left unattended while in the water. Furthermore, Dachshunds have a tendency to be excitable when they are swimming, so care should be taken that they don't overexert themselves and become exhausted.
Typically, Dachshunds get along well with other pets. Their size means they are usually not a threat to larger animals, and because of their friendly and outgoing temperament, they often enjoy the presence of other pets. Training from a young age is often the best way to ensure your Dachshund interacts properly with other animals. Making sure their social needs are met will help them to recognize and accept animals that they are unfamiliar with. Socialization and proper supervision will help your Dachshund to get along safely with other pets.
Training a Dachshund can be challenging due to their independent nature, but is far from impossible. The key to successful training is consistency and patience. Dachshunds are highly intelligent animals and with the right guidance they will learn how to follow commands and ultimately become good-natured companions. Start with basic commands like 'sit', 'stay' and 'come', and reward your pup with positive reinforcement such as treats or praise. As they grow older, expand their training by introducing more complex commands and stimulation.
