Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a type of breed of dogs which were bred for the purpose of hunting. They are famous for their long and low bodies, and short legs. They are friendly, active, and playful with an independent spirit. They are also quite loyal and go where their owners go. They can make great companions and are intelligent enough to learn commands. Dachshunds usually have a life span of 12 to 15 years, though they can sometimes live up to 20 years.
Dachshunds are classified as a low-shedding breed, but they do still require regular maintenance to ensure their coats and skin are healthy. While they do shed some hair, the shedding is often vastly less than more heavily furred breeds. Keep in mind that regular brushing is essential to maintain a healthy coat and to reduce chances of hair matting. Furthermore, regular bathing is important to keep their coat and skin looking and feeling healthy. Additionally, using a good quality brush can help to loosen dander when brushing, further reducing shedding.
Dachshunds are generally considered a small breed of dog with distinct dietary needs and the best food for them really depends on their age and activity level. High quality wet food with a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins should be considered for the adult Dachshund. Small breed dry food formulas are also available and can be mixed with wet food or given as a snack. It is important to talk to your vet to identify what type of food is best for your particular Dachshund.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Dachshund will take a commitment of your time, patience, and understanding. To help your pup thrive, be sure to give him plenty of love and exercise, socialize him with other animals, provide him with a healthy diet, create positive reinforcement training with rewards, and always stay consistent with your expectations. Additionally, it is important to ensure your pup gets regular vet visits, as well as routine grooming to keep him healthy and happy.
Dachshunds are small-ish dogs compared to many other breeds; however, their size can vary quite a bit. Miniature Dachshunds typically weigh up to 11 pounds and are as short as five inches from the floor to their shoulders, whereas the standard sized dachshund can weigh up to 32 pounds and be as tall as eight inches from the floor to their shoulders.
The amount of time you should walk your Dachshund should be based on their age, health, and activity level. A healthy adult Dachshund requires a minimum of 20 minutes of exercise per day and can safely handle as much as 40 minutes. If your Dachshund is younger and more active, they may require up to an hour of exercise divided into two 30-minute daily walks. As your Dachshund ages, or if they have certain health issues, the amount of exercise should be adjusted accordingly.
Dachshunds, with their small size and big personalities, can generally get along well with children if they are properly socialized. Dachshunds tend to be good-natured and affectionate, though they can tend to be protective of their owners. It's important to make sure your Dachshund is introduced to children gradually and that boundaries and expectations, like not pestering sleeping or eating dogs, are set early on. It is also important to supervise any interactions between children and Dachshunds, just as with any other dog.
The amount of time needed to train a dachshund each day varies depending on the individual dog's personality and unique needs. Generally speaking, however, you should be dedicating at least 15 to 20 minutes every day to training activities like teaching basic obedience commands and reinforcing desired behaviors. This daily time spent training can be broken up into several shorter sessions through out the day, such as 5 minutes of positive reinforcement and playtime followed by another 5 or 10 minutes of training activities.
