Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a loyal, energetic breed best known for their elongated bodies and short legs. Though they are small dogs, they have a big-dog attitude and love to play. They make excellent companions for those looking for a fun-loving pup to add to their family. These pooches are also quite independent thinkers and may need a patient and consistent leader. Dachshunds come in two sizes and three coat varieties; smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. The Miniature variety is the same as the Standard but smaller in size.
Dachshunds do shed and their coat type can vary from semi-long to smooth-haired. In general, they tend to have lower to moderate maintenance grooming needs. Shedding can be kept to a minimum through regular brushing, at least twice a week. Additionally, their coats can benefit from a bath every 4-6 weeks depending on how active they are. However, while regular grooming can help keep the coat and shedding to a minimum, owners should still be prepared for some amount of shedding.
Dachshunds have special dietary needs that should be taken into consideration. The food you feed your pet should be age appropriate and nutritionally balanced for their breed, as well as your pet's particular needs. It's best to feed your pet a high-quality, complete and balanced food specially formulated for their size and life stage. Table scraps are generally not recommended as these can sometimes lead to health issues, and treats should also be in moderation. It's important to monitor your pet's weight since obesity is a common issue among Dachshunds.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Dachshund requires a lot of dedication and hard work, but with the right approach you can be sure that your pup is well looked after and happy. Start by researching the breed and learning about its behavior, so you know what to expect and can be prepared to meet their needs. Make sure to give them plenty of exercise, socialization, love, and attention. Providing them with a routine and setting clear boundaries will help them understand their position in the family and relieve any anxiety or stress they may have.
Dachshunds typically range in size from 8-9 inches tall when standing on all fours, to 15-16 inches tall when standing on their hind legs. Depending on the type (standard, mini, or kaninchen) and coat variety (smooth, long-haired, or wire-haired), Dachshunds can weigh anywhere between 16-32 pounds. Generally speaking, females are smaller than males. In addition, the size of the adult dog is largely determined by its parents' size.
Dachshunds are medium-sized, active dogs that need at least an hour of exercise a day, including a daily walk and playtime. They also benefit from a walk and/or training session during the day for mental stimulation. Allow them to run outdoors in a safe area and be sure to give plenty of opportunity for mental stimulation through obedience training, agility training, or simply playing fetch. When exercising, go at your dachshund's pace and keep in mind that these active dogs need dedicated time to exercise and stimulate their minds to remain healthy and happy.
Generally, Dachshunds can get along with other pets if socialization and training are encouraged from a young age. It is important to remember that all dogs are different and there can be some variability in how they interact with other animals in the home. With the right environment and guidance, Dachshunds can be completely comfortable around cats, other dogs, rodents, birds, reptiles and more. A gentler introduction with other pets in the home is also helpful and Dachshunds may even form close bonds with them.
The amount of minutes per day needed to effectively train Dachshunds will vary based on the individual needs of the dog and the expectations of the pet parent. Generally, 10 to 15 minutes of undivided attention and practice of positive reinforcement-based commands every day will yield good results over time. Consistency is key, so the more frequently, shorter-duration training sessions are best. While 10-15 minutes might be adequate for some scenarios, dogs who are more difficult to train may need more time each day—possibly closer to 30 minutes.
