Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a commonly known, and beloved, breed of dog, belonging to the hound family. They are known for their elongated body shape, small size, big ears, and short legs. They originated from Germany, and were bred to hunt and flush out badgers and other burrowing animals. They come in a variety of colors and coat types, and usually stand between 8 and 9 inches at the shoulder. Dachshunds are very loyal and affectionate, and will become deeply devoted to their owners.
Dachshunds have a coat that can be coarser or more soft and silky than other breeds'. Depending on the type, it can range from short and smooth to quite long and wiry. Most dachshunds have double coats, which are thick and full of luster. Generally, the undercoat is soft and dense, while the outer coat has guard hairs that are either short and stiff or long and rough. The predominant colors are red, black and tan, with different color patterns such as dapple or brindle.
Dachshunds are small dogs, originally bred to hunt badgers and other small mammals. As a result, they have high energy and need to be fed a nutritionally balanced diet to ensure their long-term health and wellbeing. A good diet for them includes quality dry kibble balanced with wet food, raw diets, or homemade meals. Protein should be the first ingredient, and a mix of fat and carbohydrates is important too. While treats are fine, they should still be fed in moderation to avoid weight gain.
Before bringing a Dachshund into your home, you should make sure you have the necessary items on hand. These essentials include some basic supplies, such as food and water bowls, a bed, a collar and leash, a crate, and toys. Additionally, you should get a few at-home grooming supplies, such as a brush, nail clippers, and a toothbrush and toothpaste appropriate for dogs. Investing in an upholstery or pet hair cleaner can also be helpful.
Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds usually grow up to 16-32 pounds and measure 8-9 inches in height at the shoulder, while Miniature Dachshunds are smaller versions weighing less than 11 pounds and standing no more than 5-6 inches tall. Additionally, some breeders have produced Toy Dachshunds, which are even smaller with an optimal weight of less than 6 pounds.
Dachshunds are active breeds and need more exercise than some people think. Generally speaking, they should have around twenty to thirty minutes of vigorous physical activity per day. Exercise could include walks or runs, playing fetch, activities in the yard or even trips to the dog park. To keep these energetic breeds both healthy and happy, you should also give plenty of mental stimulation through obedience training and tricks, puzzle toys and interactive games. Make sure to keep the pace of exercise appropriate to your pup's age and physical condition, and always provide a cool and safe area to rest afterwards.
Many Dachshunds are quite social and get along with other pets, as long as they have been properly socialized with them. While some Dachshunds may be more aggressive towards other pets than others, as an owner, it is important to ensure that the Dachshunds and other pets they live with are comfortable with one another. This can be done through supervised playtime, introducing the two animals in a positive environment, and managing their interactions. With good management, many Dachshunds will generally be able to cohabitate well with other pets.
Training a Dachshund can be a challenging task but rewarding if you follow a few basic guidelines. As with all animals, consistency is key. Set aside a few minutes each day for structured play and training activities. Be sure to reward your Dachshund with positive reinforcement such as treats or verbal praise for obedience, and never punish them for mistakes. Start with basic commands such as 'Sit', 'Down', and 'Stay', as well as house-training.
