Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a unique breed of dog and are known for their long body and short legs. One of the most fun facts about this breed of dog is that they were originally bred to hunt small animals such as badgers. In fact, their name comes from the German words, "Dach" meaning badger and "Hund" meaning hound. Another fun fact about them is that they can actually be quite vocal when prompted.
Dachshunds are not designated as a non-shedding breed, and they typically shed year-round. Some may have a lighter seasonal shedding, but they are not hypoallergenic, and it can be difficult for allergy sufferers to co-exist with a Dachshund. With regular grooming, it will help keep natural shedding under control and also keeps their coats clean and healthy. Filling the air with less dander will help reduce allergies and minimize the amount of daily shedding, but Dachshunds are not zero-shedding dogs.
Dachshunds should not be fed food that is high in fat, as this can make them gain too much weight, or suffer from pancreatitis. Foods with a high sugar content, especially chocolate, should also be avoided as it can make them ill. Other things that should not be given to a Dachshund are: avocadoes, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, and garlic or onions in any form. Also, large chunks of raw meat can put unnecessary strain on their digestive system, so these should be avoided as well.
Becoming an excellent pet parent for your Dachshund requires time and dedication. The best way to start is to research the breed to understand its temperament, needs, and quirks. Talk to experienced Dachshund owners and your veterinarian for advice and tips on how to best care for your pup. Provide your pup with adequate exercise; Dachshunds were bred to hunt, so take your pup on walks and do activities that challenge them mentally and physically. Training should begin early teach your dog basic command words and encourage good behavior.
Dachshunds will typically weigh between 16-32 pounds, which is below the standard for medium-sized (32-50 pounds) and large (50-100 pounds) dogs. Thus, they would generally be considered a small-to-medium breed of dog, rather than a big dog. However, they have a lot of personality and enthusiasm which can make the owner feel like they have a much bigger companion! Their size also makes them great for living in smaller spaces, like apartments.
Dachshunds require moderate levels of exercise to stay healthy and happy. It's important to keep your dachshund active and stimulated to prevent boredom-related behaviors. Depending on the age and energy level of your pet, daily walks are recommended. Young Dachshunds can benefit from several short walks throughout the day or a combination of walking and indoor play sessions. An adult dachshund may benefit from 15-30 minutes of walking a day, and seniors may benefit from a short 10-15 minute walk.
Dachshunds can make great companions for children, as these friendly, loyal and playful dogs form strong bonds with their human families. Generally speaking, they get along very well with kids and can provide hours of fun entertainment. With the proper upbringing and socialisation, dachshunds can learn to get along with other animals and humans, as well as obey basic commands, meaning they can provide a great source of companionship for children.
Dachshunds are known for being intelligent and loyal companions. With proper training and socialization, they can thrive in almost any home. As a breed, these dogs have been around for centuries and were bred for a variety of tasks, including hunting and finding truffles. They have a good memory and problem-solving skills, as well as a tendency to be devoted to the task at hand. Additionally, Dachshunds possess a high energy level and an inquisitive nature making them one of the most trainable and obedient breeds.
