Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a class of dog which is a member of the hound group. They are often referred to as a ‘sausage dog’ due to their long, low body shape. Dachshunds come in a variety of colors and sizes, with the smallest dachshund weighing as little as 8 pounds and the largest weighing up to 32 pounds. Their coats can be either short-haired, long-haired, or wire-haired, with the wire-haired being the most unique.
Dachshunds have low to moderate shedding depending on their coat type. That said, Dachshunds are known to cause very few allergies. Generally, dander and saliva can trigger allergies, but Dachshunds produce very little of both, making them an ideal breed for allergy sufferers. Consequently, most people with allergies will experience minimal to no irritation from a Dachshund. Even though Dachshunds have been bred for centuries, they are not as common as some other breeds, making them a less likely source of allergies.
When it comes to selecting the best food for your Dachshund, you want to ensure that it is well balanced and rich in nutrients, including proper levels of proteins and minerals, as well as healthy fats and carbohydrates. A high-quality food with limited ingredients is right for Dachshunds, as they are prone to sensitive stomachs and food allergies. A quality commercial food (straight from the pet store) tailored for smaller breeds should be adequate for feeding your Dachshund; however, it's always best to check with your veterinarian for specific recommendations.
Before getting a Dachshund, it is essential to have the necessary supplies on hand. Make sure you have a comfortable dog bed, some fun toys, long-lasting, chewable treats, appropriate food for the breed, food and water bowls, collar and leash, brush and comb, veterinary records, and all the necessary medication. It is also important to have identification tags with your contact information attached to the collar. Additionally, make sure there is a safely enclosed area where your Dachshund can run around and play.
The size of your Dachshund puppy will vary, depending on the type of Dachshund you own. Standard Dachshunds tend to grow to be around 15-20 pounds, while miniature Dachshunds will usually peak around 11 pounds. However, it's important to remember that different breeds can affect the size your puppy will reach as an adult. Generally speaking, growth occurs steadily until they are around 10 months old. After that, it may take a while for them to fully reach their full size.
Although Dachshunds are small and relatively low-maintenance, they still need plenty of active playtime. Generally, a Dachshund should get at least two 10-15 minute walks per day, plus several other 10-15 minute play and exercise sessions during the day. Additionally, taking these dogs to an off-leash dog park allows them to get quality time to release their energy and it's also important for mental stimulation.
Most Dachshunds can get along very well with children--especially if the dog is socialized early and provided with plenty of attention. The American Kennel Club describes the breed as alert, curious, and spirited--qualities that often make it an amusing and wily pet. As a result of their sometimes mischievous nature, however, it is important to supervise interaction between young children and Dachshunds. If appropriate guidelines are in place, Dachshunds will often prove to be faithful, friendly companions for children.
Dachshunds have long been heralded as being among the smartest of dogs, as they have remarkable problem-solving skills and easily learn simple commands, such as sit, stay, and come. Many Dachshunds are so intelligent that they can be successfully taught to perform tricks or open doors. Not only that, but many Dachshunds also have inquisitive and sociable personalities, meaning they can be quite attentive to humans and pick up on cues even quicker than some other breeds.
