Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are known as the "sausage dog" due to their long and distinctive body shape. Though they were originally bred to hunt small animals such as rabbits, today they make excellent companion pets. Dachshunds have a long history, dating back to the 15th century in Germany. Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature, and in three coat types: smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired.
Dachshunds have a unique coat that comes in a variety of colors and textures. Their coats range from short and smooth to long and wiry. Generally, the smooth-haired Dachshund, which also referred to as the short-haired, has a coat that is sleek and shining and does not require much grooming. The wire-haired Dachshund has fur that is courser and has a springy feel. This type of coat will require more care as it needs to be brushed and combed frequently to avoid any tangles.
A Dachshund's diet should be tailored to their specific age and activity level. It is important to choose a high-quality, nutritionally balanced and complete dog food that has been designed for the life-stage of your pet and meets their energy and nutritional requirements. For a healthy, balanced diet, look to mix your dog's food with other sources to get the best variety. Look to high-quality proteins like lean meats, eggs and fish as well as adding in vegetables such as spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots, and Brussels sprouts.
Dachshunds do have some special needs that must be taken into consideration when caring for them. They need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. In addition, their long spines and short legs require them to have a secure, cozy place to rest and stand up and down the stairs carefully. Dental health should also be monitored closely, as their teeth are prone to problems, and Dachshunds may be more susceptible to back injuries because of their long spines and short legs.
Dachshunds come in two standard sizes, standard and miniature, classified according to their shoulder height. Standard Dachshunds are usually 15 to 19 inches tall and can weigh between 16 to 32 pounds, and Miniature Dachshunds are 11 to 14 inches tall and can weigh between 11 to 16 pounds.
Every dog is unique and will have different exercise requirements. The daily walking needs for a Dachshund will vary depending on its age, breed, size, and overall health, but in general, these active and intelligent dogs should have at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Of that, 20 minutes should be dedicated to regular walks that involve brisk walking, running, and playing off-leash. Additionally, 10 minutes should be dedicated to slower, leisurely walks that allow the pup to explore and smell its environment.
The answer to this question is not quite as simple and straightforward as a yes or no. Every Dachshund is different and it can be difficult to predict how these little dogs may react or get along with children until they actually meet. For the most part, Dachshunds are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities which could make them a great fit for kids of any age. However, due to their small size, it's important to remember that children should always be supervised when interacting with these breeds as they can easily be overwhelmed by too much roughhousing.
It depends on the individual dog, as all Dachshunds have their own unique personalities and abilities. Generally speaking, you should plan to train your Dachshund for at least 10-15 minutes per day. However, you can split this into two or three shorter training sessions that are 5-10 minutes long. For puppies, you'll want to start with shorter sessions and gradually increase the length of time as the pup gets older and starts to better understand the commands. Regardless of their age, be sure to give the pup plenty of positive reinforcement throughout the training process.
