Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a breed of dog that originated in Germany over 400 years ago. They are unique in their long, low bodies and short legs, giving them their nickname of 'sausage dogs' because of their shape. While originally bred to hunt small animals such as badgers, they are now a popularly pet due to their sweet and loyal nature. Dachshunds are an intelligent and independent breed, and can be quite vocal. They thrive best with an active and attentive family, as they thrive on companionship.
Dachshunds are not completely non-shedding, as they are classified as a breed that has "moderate shedding". They do typically produce more hair than breeds considered to be low shedding, but their shedding is not extreme either. Brushing them regularly can help reduce the amount of loose hair that is shed, and regular grooming by a professional is also recommended. Dachshunds have a double coat, made up of a softer, denser undercoat and a more coarse outer guard coat, and both of these layers shed throughout the year.
Dachshunds are active, muscular dogs that can require a lot of energy to keep them healthy and happy. Because of this, they tend to have a higher calorie diet than some other smaller breeds. While the specifics of their diet can vary based on their age and size, a good rule of thumb is to feed them a balanced, high-quality kibble, supplemented with lean proteins such as cooked fish, chicken, or turkey, as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables.
It is very important to prepare your home for a new Dachshund. First, be sure to puppy-proof your house; this means blocking off anything dangerous or breakable, in addition to anything toxic that should be out of reach. Secondly, purchase everything you will need for your pup, such as food bowls, toys, leashes, a bed for them to sleep in, and any other supplies you think they will need. Thirdly, create a safe, comfortable place for them in your home.
Dachshunds are considered as small-bodied dogs, despite their longer stature. Generally, the typical adult size of a Dachshund is between 8-11 inches in height and usually around 16-32 pounds in weight. Dachshunds come in three different coat varieties and two separate sizes; standard and miniature. The standard size ranges anywhere from 8-9 inches in height, while the miniature size ranges from 5-6 inches. Overall, both sizes of Dachshunds will have a maximum total length (including tail) of about 12-14 inches.
While some Dachshunds may enjoy taking a dip in the water, the breed's short legs and long back can make it difficult for them to swim. A Dachshund's heavy chest and short legs can cause them to sink in deep water. It's important to be mindful of any swimming activities with your Dachshund as they require extra care and supervision. Additionally, some Dachshunds may be scared of the water and not like to swim at all due to the instability it can cause.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds can get along very well with kids. In fact, they can make great family pets. Dachshunds are far more social, outgoing, and affectionate with people they know which can often lead to them forming very special bonds with children. They also tend to have plenty of energy and enthusiasm which allows them to keep up with even the most active kids. That being said, it is important for children to be properly taught how to interact with their Dachshund, as with any breed, to ensure its safety and prevent any misbehavior.
The exact amount of time that you may need to dedicate to training your Dachshund will depend on the individual temperament of the dog and the goals you have set. It is recommended that you start with short sessions once a day and then slowly build up the duration of time over subsequent days. Generally speaking, it is a good idea to aim for between 15 to 20 minutes per session, given about a total of at least one hour of training per day (this could be split up into three shorter sessions).
