Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed. Originally bred as a hunting dog for badgers, Dachshunds, also known as "wiener" or "sausage dogs" come in two sizes, standard and miniature. Standard Dachshunds are 16-32 pounds, and miniature Dachshunds are 11 pounds or less. All Dachshunds have a cheerful personality, but can be strong-willed at times. Dachshunds come in two types of coatssmooth and long-haired.
Dachshunds may cause an allergic reaction in some people, but not everyone who comes into contact with them will have an allergic reaction. Allergies to dog fur and dander are common, and can be triggered by a dachshund's coat. However, there are steps you can take to reduce the chance of having a reaction. Keeping your dachshund groomed on a regular basis and avoiding contact with them when they are shedding can help.
Dachshunds need a balanced diet to keep them healthy and active. When selecting food for your pooch, look for a food specifically designed for small or toy breed dogs, as the nutrition requirements of these breeds differ from those of larger breeds. Quality ingredients are important, and it’s best to avoid foods with added preservatives or artificial flavoring. Protein sources such as chicken, fish, and lamb should be the first ingredient on the label. Always check labels for allergens, as Dachshunds, like other lap dogs, commonly experience food sensitivities.
First and foremost, you need to make sure that your home is safe for your Dachshund. You should remove any potential choking hazards, such as small objects like buttons, and install pet gates to prevent them from entering any areas of your home that may be dangerous for them. Secondly, consider purchasing a comfortable dog bed where your new Dachshund can relax. Placing it in a quiet spot that offers some privacy can also provide your pet with a sense of security.
Dachshunds are considered small or miniature dogs, typically ranging in size from 9 to 14 inches and from 8 to 18 pounds once fully grown. The miniature variety are considered those weighing 11 pounds or less. Generally, a miniature Dachshund will stand from 8 to 11 inches tall at their shoulder, while a standard-sized Dachshund will stand from 12 to 15 inches tall. They come in three different coat types: smooth, wire-haired and long-haired. All types of Dachshunds are playful, courageous, highly determined and intelligent breed.
The amount of time your Dachshund should spend walking each day depends on their age, health, and energy level. As a general rule, it's best to walk your Dachshund for at least 15 minutes twice a day, but that can be adjusted depending on your pet's needs. Puppies and elderly or ill Dachshunds should take shorter walks or engage in more leisurely physical activities, such as playing in the yard or at the park, while younger and healthier Dachshunds can go for longer walk periods of 30 minutes or more.
Dachshunds can generally get along with other pets, just like any other breed, provided they are properly socialized and introduced to each other gradually. With early positive experiences and with proper handling, they can usually form great relationships with other animals, including cats and even other breeds of dogs. Training is key; teaching them how to get along with other animals and to never bark or hurt the other animal can help them learn to both live with and enjoy the company of others. Regular outings with your pet and other pets can also help them build positive relationships.
The amount of time needed to train a Dachshund each day can vary greatly depending on the individual dog and the level of training desired. The key is to spend quality time with your Dachshund in a positive and consistent way. A good starting point might be to spend approximately 10 minutes per day teaching your Dachshund commands and practicing them. Additionally, you should be spending time each day ensuring your dog gets enough exercise by providing it with access to playtime and daily walks. Taking the time to socialize and bond with your Dachshund is also important.
