Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are incredibly interesting little dogs! For starters, they have unusually long bodies and short legs that help them squeeze into and out of tight spaces. Additionally, their long ears are able to pick up on vibrations when they're underground, making them great search and rescue dogs. Dachshunds have just enough energy for play, but they're not too high energy, which makes them the perfect house pet for those that don't have the time for a bigger dog.
Dachshunds generally do not contribute to developing allergies. While this breed is classified as a hypoallergenic pet, as with any type of animal, some people may experience allergic reactions. It's important to be aware that allergies may stem from multiple sources, such as pet dander (shed fur), the saliva of animals or the proteins in the animal's urine, and that it is not predictable who or what can cause the allergic reaction. If you're concerned about allergies, consider seeing a doctor for testing prior to acquiring a pet.
Dachshunds should not be fed table scraps, fatty foods, or human snack foods, as they are not suited for a dog's digestive system and can cause them to become overweight. Ingesting rawhide or bones can be especially dangerous, as it can cause choking, intestinal blockage, and/or cuts to the inside of the mouth and throat. Moreover, chocolate and other types of candy can be toxic to dogs, and can even cause death in extreme cases.
Yes, Dachshunds do have some special requirements to maintain optimal health and happiness. Their size means they don't need a whole lot of exercise, but the amount should still be monitored, as too little can lead to obesity and other health issues. Additionally, they are known as "earth dogs" and need to be invigorated with mental stimulation. For this, providing toys or letting them outside is a great way to help them exercise their brains. As far as diet goes, make sure to provide high-quality, Nutritionally balanced food that they will enjoy.
Dachshunds are considered a medium-sized dog breed, reaching between 8 and 9 inches tall as an adult and typically weighing between 16 and 32 pounds. Puppies of this breed will typically grow the most in their first twelve months, with males growing slightly bigger than females. The size of your Dachshund puppy will depend on its parents, but on average, you can expect a full-grown Dachshund to weigh between 16 and 32 pounds and be 8 to 9 inches tall.
While Dachshunds may not be natural swimmers like some other breeds, some enjoy taking a dip in a pool. Many Dachshunds like to entertain themselves by playing and splashing in the shallow end, or even paddling around under the supervision of their owner. Most Dachshunds don't enjoy deep water but may appreciate having a shallow wading pool in their own backyard. Generally, Dachshunds should not be forced to swim if they are not comfortable, as swimming can be dangerous and hard on their joints.
Dachshunds can make excellent family pets, particularly for households with younger kids. They have a playful and loyal nature, and can provide lots of fun-filled companionship for children. Dachshunds have a natural affinity for kids, and they can be excellent playmates who will happily join in activities with the family. However, it is important to supervise interaction between small children and Dachshunds, as they can sometimes become overexcited or nervous if they feel overwhelmed.
The amount of time you need to devote to training your Dachshund each day depends on many factors, such as the age and temperament of your dog. Generally speaking, about 10 to 20 minutes per day spent actively training is adequate, though more may be required for certain commands. If you are just starting to train your Dachshund, it is important to keep your sessions short in order to maintain your pup's focus. You may need to gradually build up to longer periods over time.
