Questions & Answers
A Dachshund is a small-sized hound dog originally bred in Germany as scent hounds to hunt badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. Dachshunds have a long body and short legs that make them great diggers, and their keen sense of smell and loud bark make them dependable watchdogs. They come in different coat types including short-hair, wirehair, and longhair varieties. Commonly referred to as Doxies or Wiener Dogs, they are very popular companion dogs for many households.
Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic, though they do produce less dander than other breeds. Dander is what leads to allergic reactions in humans and other animals. As such, if you have allergies, you must use caution if you are considering a Dachshund as a pet. It's also not uncommon for people to be allergic to Dachshunds. Allergists may be able to provide additional advice on having Dachshunds in homes with allergies.
Dachshunds should not be fed anything that contains too much sugar, fat, sodium, or preservatives. Foods that can easily be choking hazards or allergies can be life-threatening to a Dachshund, such as grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, and a variety of nuts including walnuts, macadamia, and others. Additionally, there are some human foods which should never be given to a Dachshund, including chocolate, avocados, alcohol, caffeine, fatty meats, hard and starchy foods, and raw bones.
Before deciding to get a Dachshund, you should ensure you have the proper items to care for it. Be sure to have a secure and comfortable bed for your dog to sleep in, a safe, adequately-sized crate to use when you are not able to supervise, chew-resistant items for it to play with, a leash so you can go for walks together, an appropriate collar or harness to attach the leash to, high-quality food, and a variety of treats to reward and encourage good behavior.
Without a veterinarian´s examination, it is difficult to predict an exact size your Dachshund puppy will be as an adult. Generally, as with most dog breeds, the size of a Dachshund puppy can vary depending on the pup's parentage, as well as any potential mix of breeds that may have contributed to its genetics. On average, a full grown Dachshund will range from 8-9 inches tall with a body frame length of about 12-18 inches. They generally weigh 16-32 pounds as adults, with males typically being heavier than females.
Generally speaking, Dachshunds should have at least two separate walks throughout the day, but the number of minutes that you should walk your pup will depend on a few factors. Generally speaking, young pups should get 30 minutes of exercise per day while adults require 45 minutes to an hour of walking and active play. It's important to understand however that every Dachshund is different and the amount of exercise required will depend on numerous factors like age, health, weight, personality, and breed type.
Dachshunds can typically get along with other pets, though it highly depends on the individual animal's temperament. Generally, if the Dachshund is exposed to the other pet from a young age and properly socialized, they should have no problem getting along. However, it is still important to introduce other animals slowly and carefully to avoid any sudden aggression. Dachshunds are friendly pets and are usually willing to share the attention and love of their humans with other pets.
Training a Dachshund can depend on a variety of factors. Generally speaking, a healthy Dachshund that has been trained and socialized properly can learn basic commands and behaviors quite quickly. Owners should be aware that a Dachshund is a stubborn breed, however, and maintaining their compliant behavior may require ongoing effort. That being said, with patience and consistency any Dachshund can be an obedient and rewarding pet. Keeping an eye out for potential bad habits and correcting them early is also an important part of training any dog, including a Dachshund.
