Questions & Answers
Dachshunds, commonly referred to as "sausage dogs", are a medium sized breed of the Hound group with a long body and short legs. They have a smooth, short-haired coat available in a variety of colors and patterns. They have large, expressive eyes and floppy ears with a distinct "houndy" bark. Dachshunds are playful, loyal, and intelligent, which makes them great family dogs. They are highly adaptable and do well in various home environments as long as they get plenty of exercise and stimulation.
Dachshunds are not hypoallergenic. While their wiry coats are easily groomed and won't collect a lot of debris, they do shed some and will transfer dander the same as any other dog breed. While individual Dachshunds may be better for someone with pet allergies, overall they are not considered hypoallergenic and are not recommended for those with extremely severe dog allergies. If you have severe allergies, it is best to consult with your doctor to decide which type of dogs, if any, are safe for you to be around.
Dachshunds should not be fed any human food such as hot dogs, sausages, chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, or anything with caffeine. It's best to stick to giving them specially formulated dog food which provides them with the right balance of nutrients and vitamins. Dachshunds should also never be given bones, as these can be a choking hazard or cause intestinal obstruction. Be aware that any treats should be given sparingly, as they can add up quickly in terms of calories and fat, leading to weight gain.
In order to prepare your home for a new Dachshund, it is important to do some planning and research beforehand. First, consider the size of the breed and plan the space it will occupy in your home. Additionally, review your floor plan to make sure that you keep any wires, plants, and other household items that could be hazardous out of reach. Remember to devote time and energy to training your Dachshund ensure that the pup is socialized properly and taught its boundaries.
Whether you consider Dachshunds to be big dogs is largely a matter of perspective. By comparison to full-grown Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and other large breeds, Dachshunds may seem quite petite. However, Dachshunds are certainly not small dogs and can stand between eight and nine inches, making them taller than smaller breeds like Chihuahuas and Toy Poodles. Additionally, a full grown adult male typically weighs between 16 and 32 pounds, which is heavier than smaller breeds.
Taking your Dachshund running can be a great way for them to get exercise and take in the sights and smells of the outdoors. However, it is important to keep in mind that Dachshunds may not have the same stamina, so if you plan on running for a longer period of time it may be best to avoid taking them on your jog. Additionally, they should remain on a leash to ensure they don't wander too far away.
Dachshunds can generally get along with children when properly introduced and socialized. It is important to remember that these dogs were bred to hunt small animals, so their prey drive can get triggered when around kids who are running and screaming. It is important to train dachshunds at an early age, teach them expectations for behavior while around children, and have children understand why certain types of behavior can upset the dog.
Training your Dachshund is important for their health, safety, and wellbeing. It is also a great way to bond with your pet and establish a strong relationship with them. Start small, and break down each command into simple steps. Be consistent and provide positive reinforcement when your Dachshund follows your directions. With consistency and patience, your Dachshund should soon be following your commands. Make sure to provide your pup with small treats and lots of vocal praise when they are successful. Additionally, avoid punishing your canine as it can easily lead to more behavioral issues.
