One of the most interesting qualities about them is their incredible loyalty and tenacity. Dachshunds are often called "weiner dogs" or "sausage dogs" due to their shape, but they will never back down from a challenge. This breed is very brave, determined, and loyal, which makes them popular amongst many owners.
Unfortunately, Dachshunds do shed. However, the amount they shed may depend on the type of fur they have, such as short or long haired. Long haired Dachshunds usually shed quite a bit, whereas short haired varieties tend to shed less often. Also, the breed is not considered a hypoallergenic breed, so if you are looking for a non-shedding canine companion, you may want to consider a different breed.
Dachshunds do have special dietary needs that should be taken into consideration when deciding what to feed them. Because this breed is prone to obesity, their meals should be managed carefully and should contain an appropriate balance of wholesome proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Standard Dachshunds, also called the “long-haired” variety, generally mature into an adult weighing between 17 and 32 pounds with an average adult size ranging from 11 to 16 inches in height. “Miniature” Dachshunds, on the other hand, mature to between 8 and 11 pounds with heights between 8 and 10 inches. The “wire-haired” type averages at around 16 pounds and between 10 and 11 inches in height. However, these are simply averages.
Generally speaking, most Dachshunds enjoy going for a swim. In the summer months, they may particularly enjoy taking a dip in cool, refreshing water. Whether or not they actually like the swimming experience depends on the individual. Some Dachshunds don't seem to mind getting their paws wet, while others might shy away from getting in too deep. After a few attempts, some Dachshunds may even develop a real love of the activity.
