Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are amongst the most unique and captivating breeds of dogs out there. A lot of their physical characteristics are incredibly appealing, such as their large eyes, snub noses, and muscular, stocky bodies. Additionally, French Bulldogs have the rare ability to make people smile with their beautiful, friendly faces and charming personalities. They're also incredibly adaptable and easy to train, making them great companions for first-time dog owners.
French Bulldogs have a low-shedding coat, so they are considered a non-shedding breed. While they may not have obvious signs of shedding, their skin can sometimes produce small amounts of oil and dander. This can lead to a small amount of hair loss. While their coat does not require a huge amount of grooming, some French Bulldog owners may choose to trim their coat to minimize any shedding. All in all, the breed has a low-shedding coat and overall is considered a non-shedding breed.
French Bulldogs are typically omnivores and will eat anything from kibble or wet food to cooked meats and vegetables. Generally, they should have a balanced diet just like any other dog breed. They should be eating the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins that are found in a mix of both kibble and wet food. Additionally, French Bulldogs should be getting at least one fresh cooked meal each day. This fresh cooked meal should include lean proteins such as fish, chicken, lean beef or lamb along with fresh vegetables and some good quality carbohydrates like couscous, quinoa or brown rice.
French Bulldogs have some special requirements, including grooming, veterinary care, and exercise. For grooming, French Bulldogs often need to be brushed daily and have their nails trimmed on a regular basis. They also tend to need to have their facial folds cleaned regularly to prevent infection and skin irritation. In terms of veterinary care, French Bulldogs should have regular check ups and may need to visit the vet more frequently than some other breeds of dogs. In terms of exercise, French Bulldogs need exercise on a daily basis, but should not overexert themselves and should be supervised if swimming.
French Bulldogs typically range in size from 11 to 12 inches at the shoulder, with some small varieties ranging from 9 to 11 inches. The average weight range is typically 16 to 28 pounds, with some larger males reaching as much as 38 pounds, and the smallest females weighing in at 11 pounds. In terms of overall stature, French Bulldogs are considered to be a sturdy, muscular breed with short legs and a long, square-shaped head. The breed has been developed in various sizes, though the AKC only recognizes one standard size.
While French Bulldogs are not known as the most highly active dog breeds, they are still fun and energetic companions. They can be quite lively indoors, content to romp around with their people for short periods of time. French Bulldogs can enjoy going on short walks or exploring an enclosed dog park. They usually don't require an intense exercise regimen; their needs can usually be met with regular play sessions and occasional outings. It is important to note that French Bulldogs do not handle heat well and should not be taken on strenuous outdoor activities in warm weather.
French Bulldogs have sweet personalities and can certainly get along with children when properly socialized. They often have a strong bond with their people, and with the appropriate introduction, your French Bulldog can fit right in with your family. When introducing a French Bulldog to your children, it’s important to go slowly. Monitor all interactions with your Frenchie and your children closely and be sure to provide plenty of treats and positive reinforcement to encourage friendly interactions. Don't forget to provide obedience training for your French Bulldog in a safe and positive way as well.
Training a French Bulldog can be an enjoyable experience when done correctly. While no dog is truly “easy” to train, a French Bulldog is typically an intelligent breed that’s eager to please, which makes training quite manageable. Keep in mind, though, that it’s important to start training early so your pup can learn good behaviors to replace the bad. Establishing your awesomeness as a leader is important for Frenchies, and it’s key to motivating your pup to learn quickly.
