Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs were originally developed in the 19th century in Paris by crossing a small Bulldog with a Pug. Standing approximately 11-12 inches tall, they are the smallest of all Bulldog breeds. These friendly, bright-eyed dogs have a strong loyalty to their owners and are notable for their ‘bat’-like ears and their eagerness for adventure. As comical as they can be, French Bulldogs are surprisingly fast runners and can keep up with canines of larger breeds. They also love swimming and playing in the water, which is not always the case with Bulldogs.
French Bulldogs are considered a low-shedding breed due to their short coat which is smooth and fine. This makes them a great allergy-friendly choice for many people. However, no breed of dog is 100% non-shedding and the French Bulldog falls into that category as well. Although they don't typically shed large amounts of fur, you will likely still find some fur left behind on furniture, clothes, and other items. Regular brushing and grooming can help minimize the amount of fur that is scattered around the house.
French Bulldogs, like all canines, have specific dietary requirements. While they don't necessarily have any dietary needs that are unique to their breed, there are some important considerations to make to ensure they are getting the proper nutrition. It is important to consult with your veterinarian about the best diet for your dog since energy and nutrient requirements vary between breeds, sizes, and lifestyles. Puppies require a greater amount of energy, protein, and other nutrients compared to adults to support their rapid development. An adult diet should contain fewer calories and more fiber to help the dog feel full and maintain a healthy weight.
Becoming the best puppy parent for a French Bulldog requires dedication and lots of love! It is important to provide socialization, exercise, nutrition, and most importantly, affection. Healthy socialization should be done early on by introducing the pup to people, animals, and places. Make sure to exercise the pup regularly, but know that it doesn’t take a whole lot! Nutrition should be carefully monitored to ensure the pup is getting the right size, amount, and type of food for their breed and lifestyle. Above all, affection is key.
French Bulldogs, also known as ‘Frenchie’s’, are small dogs that typically grow to a height of 12 -16 inches and weigh between 15 – 28 pounds. They are quite a small breed and so are not considered to be a very big dog. The average weight of a Frenchie indicates they are a compact and sturdy breed, sometimes even humorous or comical. French Bulldogs are popular dogs and make good family pets, however, because of their size, they are not usually suited to long distances of outdoors activity.
A daily walking routine for your French Bulldog is essential for their physical and mental health. As a general rule of thumb, about 30 minutes per day of walking should be sufficient for your pup, but this will vary depending on their age and activity level. Ideally, all breeds of dog should be walked for at least 20 minutes and it is important to factor in any off-leash playtime that you may be engaging in with them. Additionally, if your Frenchie loves to explore, try to incorporate some hikes or other walks in more challenging terrain into their weekly routine.
French Bulldogs can make great companions for kids. They're very affectionate, sociable, and relatively low-maintenance. They generally get along well with children, and can be incredibly loyal and loving. Their size and nature make them an ideal companion for young kids, and they can be great playmates since they love to play and show affection. As a responsible pet parent, it's important to always supervise your Frenchie when around kids, as their size and/or excited play may cause unintended injury.
Training your French Bulldog is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. It requires dedication, time, patience, and consistency. A good place to start is by socializing your French Bulldog while they are puppies. This means meeting people, other dogs, and new environments, among other things. You can also start teaching basic commands during puppyhood, so your pup can learn commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. Rewarding desired behaviors is important, as this will help teach your pup what you want them to do.
