Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are a member of the brachycephalic family, otherwise known as the flat-faced breeds. They are a medium-sized dog breed that have a compact and muscular body with a long and low-set tail. The most notable characteristic of this breed is their large, bat-shaped ears and facial wrinkles. French Bulldog coats can come in a variety of colors and can range from solid colors to mixed patterned colors.
French Bulldogs are a low shedding breed, though not typically classified as non-shedding. They can produce dander that can linger on furniture and other surfaces. However, regular brushing can help control the amount of loose hair that ends up all over your house. The smooth coat of a French Bulldog is especially easy to groom, since the single layer of fur is short. Therefore a brush at least once a week should be more than enough to keep the shedding to a minimum.
French Bulldogs should not consume chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, or any other human foods that are high in calories, fat, salt, sugar, or spices, as these can be poisonous to them. French Bulldogs should also avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates, such as bread, rice, or pasta. Large cuts of meat, including bones, should also be avoided for safety reasons. In addition, they should not eat certain items that are not food, such as toys, coins, plant material, and plastic items, as these can be harmful when ingested.
French Bulldogs have some unique needs that should be met in order to keep them healthy and happy. These dogs have a tendency towards breathing issues, which can be hard to manage. As such, they should be provided with an environment with low humidity, good ventilation, and no exposure to extreme temperatures or high altitudes. Additionally, due to the shape and size of their head, potential owners should be aware that they often require special care during the birthing process.
French Bulldogs are generally classified as a small-to-medium-sized breed of dog. While the size of any particular individual may vary, the breed as a whole typically stands between 11 and 12 inches tall at the shoulder, with a weight of around 28 to approximately 35 pounds. They have short, compact bodies, with features including a broad head, an undershot jaw, and round eyes. French Bulldogs have wonderful temperaments and are known for being a devoted, gentle, and affectionate breed.
While your French Bulldog may have lots of energy, it is not generally recommended to take them on runs due to their brachycephalic (short-nosed) nature. This means that these dogs cannot stroll for prolonged periods in warm and/or humid weather. Therefore, if your French Bulldog is going outside for any length of time in these conditions, you should stick to leisurely walks instead. Running with a French Bulldog in high heat and humidity can adversely affect their breathing, so it’s best to avoid it.
French Bulldogs can make wonderful playmates for children. They are generally good with other animals and they can be laid back, making them good candidates for families with children of any age. As long as the dog is accustomed to being around children and taught proper manners, your Frenchie will make a great companion for your whole family. It's important that you provide your pup with plenty of mental and physical stimulation to help ensure a happy and healthy relationship. Also, providing them with plenty of love and affection will help build the bond between your pup and your kids.
It is recommended that French Bulldogs get at least 60 minutes of physical exercise every day. This exercise should include high intensity activities such as running, playing fetch, and swimming. Training is also a great way to socialize and build the bond between you and your dog. Depending on your dog’s energy level, 15-30 minutes of basic commands, agility, and obedience practice is recommended daily. Mix up the routine and use positive reinforcement to keep it interesting and encourage your dog to want to learn.
