Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are considered a member of the Non-Sporting Group of breeds by the American Kennel Club. Frenchies are small, stocky dogs that typically have a short muzzle, short legs, and large, rounded heads. They are known for having an incredibly friendly, endearing temperament and are loyal to their owners. The breed is also known for its intelligence and easily adaptable nature ideal for families with children and other pets. French Bulldogs have even been bred to develop more energy and become more friendly.
French Bulldogs have a unique, short, and smooth coat. Its coat is usually a brindle, sealed, fawn, or pied color, although they can come in a wide variety of colors. French Bulldogs have a double coat, meaning they have two layers of fur, and shed very little. Their coat is thick enough to protect them from moderately cold weather, but is not suitable for severe temperatures. Their coat should be brushed regularly with a natural bristle brush to remove all loose hairs. Bathing with a mild shampoo is necessary only a few times a year.
French Bulldogs should not be fed heavily-processed foods, such as cakes, cookies, sweets, or other sugary treats. Certain types of human foods are also not recommended, as they might cause digestive problems or be toxic. Grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, avocado, macadamia nuts, and sugary drinks to name a few. Fats and fatty snacks are also generally considered unhealthy for dogs of all breeds. Similarly, French Bulldogs should not be given any bones, as these can splinter and cause choking or stomach damage.
Preparing your home for a new French Bulldog is relatively straightforward. First, make sure your home is pet-proofed and that there is limited access to hazardous items like wires, small items, and house plants that your pup may be tempted to eat. Provide plenty of chew toys to help satisfy their need to chew and give them their own bed located in a safe, comfortable spot. Purchase food and water bowls, and a sturdy collar and leash. Purchase a crate and begin crate training your pup. Positive reinforcement and patience are key while training.
It is difficult to predict the exact size an individual French Bulldog puppy will grow to as they can vary considerably depending on their parentage and nutrition. Generally speaking, Frenchies are a solidly built, small and stocky breed with a height of 11 to 13 inches and a weight of around 20 to 28 pounds. When fully grown, their size will be heavily influenced by their diet, genetic factors, and exercise as well as general overall health, so keeping them active and nourished is key to their growth and development into adulthood.
The amount of time you should walk your French Bulldog each day is dependent on several factors including their age, breed, health, and activity level. Generally speaking, most French Bulldogs will need at least 30 minutes of moderate to brisk walking every day, although in some cases they may require more. Puppies or older dogs, as well as those with certain health conditions, may need even more time during walks. While it might be tempting to let a French Bulldog wander around the house, it is important to provide them with enough exercise for their mental and physical wellbeing.
French Bulldogs can generally get along well with other pets, especially if proper introductions and socialization are done properly. They are intelligent and can be great family pets, so introducing them to other animals like cats, fish, rabbits, or birds can be relatively easy. Socializing them early on can equip them to be more accepting of other animals and promote healthier relationships with them. It is important to remember that all animals have individual personalities and to be patient and loving when introducing pets to one another. With enough love and patience, keeping French Bulldogs and other pets together can be a great experience.
French Bulldogs are generally considered to be intelligent and eager to please, making them well-suited for teaching tricks and commands. Despite their compact size, French Bulldogs offer a lot of personality in a small package. As they are known for their adaptability, they can often inspire a strong emotional bond with their owners and those they come into contact with and are found to be both friendly and sociable as they mature in age.
