Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are classified as non-sporting dogs due to their social nature and loyalty to their owners. They have been used as companion animals for centuries because of their generally good temperament and intelligence. They are descended from a cross between the English and French Bulldogs, which created the distinct breed of French Bulldog with a shorter face and larger ears. French Bulldogs are active and tend to enjoy playtime, but they also like to relax and enjoy their owners' laps with lots of cuddles and affection. They require daily walks and plenty of mental and physical stimulation to stay healthy.
French Bulldogs are not typically considered to be hypoallergenic. Although this breed may produce less dander than other breeds, as with all dogs, the amount of dander produced can vary from one individual to the next. As a result, some French Bulldogs may be hypoallergenic in comparison to other breeds, but there isn't a scientific way to know for sure.
French Bulldogs have very sensitive digestive systems so it's important to be mindful of what you feed them. Human food such as grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, nuts, and dairy should all be avoided. Many scientists are also cautioning against feeding your dog raw or under-cooked fish, pork, chicken, and beef, as these may contain bacteria, such as salmonella or tapeworms. Additionally, any bones, rawhide, or candy should also not be a part of your French Bulldog's diet.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your French Bulldog requires research and dedication. Start by educating yourself on the breed’s needs, such as exercise requirements, nutrition, grooming, and training. Once you are familiar with the breed’s specific needs, create a plan to provide all the necessary elements, such as providing healthy food, scheduling consistent walks and play time, and setting up regular grooming sessions. Also, be sure to build a strong bond with your puppy by engaging in activities like obedience classes and teaching them how to respond to basic commands.
Your French Bulldog puppy will reach its full-size when it reaches maturity. Generally, a fully-grown French Bulldog can range between 11-13 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 16-28 lbs. The size and weight of your puppy may vary based on its gender, breeding, diet and overall health. Even within the same litter, you may find a variation in size and weight between puppies. Since French Bulldogs are known to be a smaller version of their English Bulldog ancestor, its possible to find French Bulldogs that can reach up to 16 inches and weigh up to 40 lbs.
French Bulldogs are not known by nature to be water dogs yet many of them absolutely love swimming. Swimming is a great way to provide exercise and stimulation for a French Bulldog as it is a low-impact form of exercise that is great for their joint health and muscle development. While true water dogs like Labrador Retrievers and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have a natural instinct to love to fetch from the water and spend time starting at the water, French Bulldogs may need a bit of encouragement initially, but can very easily develop a strong passion for fetching in water.
French Bulldogs typically get along very well with children, as they tend to be highly affectionate and loyal to those they are around. Frenchies don't typically require a lot of exercise and have generally good temperaments, making them a great companion for any family. Being so attentive and alert to their environment, French Bulldogs often make excellent watchdogs when it comes to protecting their families. With that being said, they can be overprotective, so it's important to start training them at an early age, teaching them how to interact and behave properly around kids.
Training a French Bulldog is not necessarily easy, but it can be very rewarding when done correctly. As with training any breed, consistency is key and should be the foundation of your approach. The best way to achieve this is to find a regimen that works for both you and your French Bulldog and stick to it. Taking care to reward good behaviors, while remaining firm and consistent when disciplining, is key. Additionally, the more you can learn about the breed, the better. Knowing common behaviors and tendencies of French Bulldogs can help to ensure that the training is successful.
