Developed through a careful selective breeding program in the 19th century, French Bulldogs are the product of a cross between Toy Bulldogs imported from England and local ratters in Paris, France. With a friendly disposition, they are a joyful companion and have rapidly become popular in the United States. Frenchies, as they are known, have short coats with mixed colors and humorous personalities. They are alert and adaptable, as well as intelligent and eager to please their owners.
French Bulldogs have a unique coat that is generally described as "bathing suit material". It is short, fine, and somewhat glossy reminiscent of a child’s leather clothing. The coat of this breed is single-layered and lies flat against their body, offering a pleasing profile. It comes in many colors, most notably fawn, brindle, and white. French Bulldogs boast light shedding but will need occasional brushing to help reduce the prevalence of shedding.
