Questions & Answers
A French Bulldog (or Frenchie) is a small breed of domestic dog developed in 19th Century France. Despite its name, it is not believed to have been developed in France, but rather descended from bulldog ancestors in England. It is considered a companion breed and has enjoyed increasing popularity since the 21st Century. This breed is marked by its flat, square face as well as broad shoulders, short physique, and large square head. Breed traits include a snorting sound, large, erect "bat-like" ears, and short legs.
French Bulldogs are considered a low-shedding breed, meaning that they naturally release less fur than other breeds. However, this does not mean they will never shed. They will shed a very light amount compared to some other breeds, but it is still important to groom them regularly to keep the coat healthy and to manage any potential shedding. This is generally achieved by brushing once or twice a week and regular bathing. Additionally, it's also important to maintain good nutrition and exercise in order to keep their coat healthy as well.
French Bulldogs should not be fed food items such as garlic, onion, grapes, and raisins, as these can be toxic to them. You should also avoid large chunks of fatty meats, which can cause digestive trouble for French Bulldogs. Grocery store brands of food designed for humans, like hotdogs, are also not recommended due to the high levels of fat they contain. Food items created specifically for a French Bulldog's unique diet, such as kibble made with fresh beef and brown rice, are encouraged.
Preparing your home for a French Bulldog is an important step to ensure they are comfortable and safe. Before bringing the French Bulldog home, make sure you check for dangerous items that the pup might be tempted to chew on, like electrical cords or breakable items. Consider getting a baby gate to section off certain areas that may be off-limits to the pup. Make sure you have plenty of playtime toys, a comfortable bed, plenty of water, appropriate food containers, and brushes or grooming tools.
French Bulldogs are not considered big dogs; rather, they are a medium-sized breed that typically weigh no more than 28 pounds. While they may appear to be on the larger side compared to other small breeds, French Bulldogs are still a fairly compact breed; they tend to stand no taller than 12 inches at the shoulder and generally have short legs and stocky bodies. Though they might not be considered "big" dogs, they do have a lot of character and attitude, making them unique and highly regarded as a beloved pet!
French Bulldogs may not be the breed of choice when you think of water-loving dogs, but they certainly do enjoy a dip in the pool or a paddle in the lake. While they may not be natural swimmers, with the right training, you can teach them to both love and be comfortable in the water. If given ample time and assistance, Frenchies can become more than capable swimmers as they have webbed feet which can add to their propulsion skills. It’s important, however, to take it slowly as the French Bulldog can tire quickly due to their shortened snouts.
French Bulldogs can typically get along with other pets, depending on how they are raised and the individual personality of each animal. Socializing your Bulldog from a young age with other animals in a safe environment can help contribute to having a successful and rewarding relationship with other pets. It's important to keep in mind that while French Bulldogs may be initially friendly with other animals, they could become territorial if they do not receive proper training and socialization.
Training a French Bulldog can be relatively easy, but certain protocols must be followed for results to be successful. Generally, French Bulldogs are smart and learn quickly, but they can also be stubborn and slightly challenging to train. To have success, consistency is key. Establish rules and stick to them. Remind your dog of the rules daily and praise them when the rules are followed. Short, consistent sessions are key with French Bulldogs as they have a short attention span. Also, ensure they have plenty of exercise opportunities, as this breed can become easily bored.
