Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, or “Frenchies”, as they are affectionately known, are a small breed of companion dog with a big personality. Typically standing around 12-16 inches tall, they are characterized by a stocky build, a short snout and perky ears. A French Bulldog has a life expectancy of about 10-12 years and they're relatively low maintenance in terms of their grooming needs. Healthwise, they can be prone to breathing issues due to their short snouts, so it's important French Bulldogs are monitored for symptoms of respiratory distress.
The French Bulldog has a unique coat that can range from smooth to more of a rough-looking texture. Generally speaking, the breed's fur is described as short, smooth and fine. The breed's coat can come in a variety of colors such as fawn, cream, brindle, black, and various shades of gray and brown. The overall coat is predominantly solid colored, however some may have a small white marking on the chest area or some patches of white fur on the face, legs, and/or tail.
French Bulldogs should not be given anything contrary to their typical diet such as snacks, table scraps, or dog food with added human ingredients. Additionally, foods that are often unhealthy and unsafe for canines such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins should never be given to French Bulldogs. Additionally, foods containing xylitol, a sugar substitute found in sugar-free items such as gums and candy, are highly toxic to French Bulldogs. Lastly, rawhide and other raw meat products can also be a choking hazard and are not advised for French Bulldogs.
Before getting a French Bulldog, make sure you have the essentials. First, you'll need to purchase a good-quality crate, multiple toys, treats, and durable chew items. Additionally, an adjustable collar and leash are necessary for outdoor pottying, walking and training. A bowl and water bottle for food and water should be on the shopping list as well. Furthermore, a nice nail clipper and other grooming products along with a comfortable bed and a few extra towels will help you create a safe and comfortable French Bulldog friendly home.
French Bulldogs come in a variety of different sizes, ranging from small to large. By far the most common size is considered to be small, with a height of 11 to 13 inches and a weight of 22 to 28 pounds. Medium-sized French Bulldogs, standing between 13 and 15 inches tall and weighing between 28 and 35 pounds, are also available. Lastly, large French Bulldogs stand up to 15 to 17 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 35 to 50 pounds. Ultimately, the size of the dog depends on the individual dog's genetics.
Walking a French Bulldog is an important part of their daily routine, and it's important to meet their exercise needs. Generally, it is recommended to walk your French Bulldog for 15-30 minutes at least twice a day. This amount of physical activity is beneficial as it will help maintain your pup’s overall health, as it helps to encourage muscle development and keep their weight under control. It is also important to provide your pup with time for mental stimulation as they may become bored if they are not properly stimulated.
French Bulldogs generally have a calm, laid-back temperament which makes them compatible with other types of pets. However, it is important to socialize your pet at an early age so that they form a bond with other animals. With proper socialization, French Bulldogs can be friendly and even protective of other pets in the household. They can develop strong friendships with other animals like cats and other canines, and will likely even initiate playtime with them. It is a good idea to supervise French Bulldogs when they are around animals they do not know, as with any pet.
Training your French Bulldog is an important part of their development and it's important to start early. The key to any effective training is consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. Be sure to set up a few simple rules and stick to them. Make sure to reward your pup for following the rules by showing them love, giving them treats, or both. It's also important to keep training sessions short and sweet to avoid overwhelming your pup. Teaching basic commands such as sit, come, stay, and down can be a great way to start.
