Questions & Answers
A French Bulldog is a small breed of dog that originated from the 1850s. The original hybrid was developed in Nottingham, England from a cross of a small type of English Bulldog with a local French breed from Paris. French Bulldogs have a playful and friendly personality, along with being loyal, devoted and alert companions. They come in a variety of colors, such as fawn, brindle, and white and are active and alert dogs that require regular exercise. French Bulldogs have short, smooth coats that require minimal grooming, and require a mild behavior training and obedience techniques.
French Bulldogs are not hypoallergenic, although they do produce less dander than other breeds which can result in fewer reactions for those with dog allergies. While Frenchies are considered low-shedding, they still require regular grooming and brushing to keep their coats healthy, which will help to stop the spread of dander and fur around the house. There are a number of other attention and care needs of the French Bulldog, such as regular exercise, temperate to warm climates, and a healthy, balanced diet to keep them healthy and happy.
French Bulldogs should not be fed grapes, raisins, chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions, garlic, chives, spinach, mushrooms, or any other food that may be dangerous for dogs. Additionally, they should not be given sugar, fatty foods, or human foods that may contain additives such as preservatives, colorings, and flavorings which could be toxic to French Bulldogs. Feeding them too much table scraps is also not advised as this could lead to obesity and other health problems.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your French Bulldog requires dedication, knowledge, and plenty of love! First, take the time to learn about the breed by doing research and talking to animal experts. Additionally, ensure your pup is getting the appropriate exercise, nutritional guidance, and medical care. Furthermore, providing a safe, secure environment and teaching your pup obedience and socialization skills are important to ensure your pup is happy and healthy. Finally, always express your love and patience as you continue to build a unique bond with your pup!
French Bulldogs come in a variety of sizes. Typically Frenchies range between 11-14 inches in height at the shoulder and can weigh up to 28 pounds. Breeding changes have resulted in French Bulldogs being bred to be both larger and smaller than the standard size, meaning that there is a wide range in available sizes. Some are even so tiny they are referred to as "teacup" French Bulldogs. Teacup French Bulldogs, while generally considered a novelty, typically range in size from 7-11 inches in height and can weigh as little as 10 pounds.
Generally speaking, it's recommended that a French Bulldog get at least 30 minutes of walking per day. If you are able to keep a consistent schedule of exercise for your pup, then it's best to split this into two 15 minute sessions per day or three 10 minute ones at minimum. Walking your French Bulldog for more than 30 minutes each day is a great thing to do too, and can further contribute to your pup's physical health and emotional well-being.
French Bulldogs are a great choice for families with children as they are generally good natured, loyal, and affectionate. Frenchies love to play and can be incredibly gentle and loving when around young kids. They're also well-suited for small space living, as Frenchies don't bark excessively and won't need to exercise as much as larger breeds. Furthermore, French Bulldogs are known for being devoted to their families, and often bond strongly with young children.
Training a French Bulldog can be a rewarding task, but it's not necessarily an easy one. Depending upon the individual pup, they may be more or less inclined to follow directions, making training a more or less difficult process. With patience and consistency, however, most French Bulldogs can be trained. It's important to remember that French Bulldogs will respond best to positive reinforcement methods such as treats and verbal praise, as opposed to negative reinforcement. Additionally, it's helpful to break up courses of training into shorter segments, rather than trying to cover too much in a single session.
