Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are a truly unique breed! They originated in 19th century France, and like their English Bulldog cousins, were used mainly for bull-baiting. However, they eventually became popular as companions for aristocrats in England and France. Some fun facts about them include that their eyes are not always the same color, they come in a variety of coat colors, and they are surprisingly good swimmers. French Bulldogs also love to burrow and can be irresistible to their humans with their big eyes and silly antics!
The French Bulldog's coat is short and fine and comes in a variety of colors and markings. On average, the coat is luxuriously soft and velvety to the touch. It is commonly seen as brindle, fawn, or white, although there are also other variations that come in cream, black, and/or tan. Some French Bulldogs have a solid color of coat, while others have a combination of two or more colors. In addition, French Bulldogs may also have a distinctive face mask of darker fur around the eyes, muzzle, and the back of the head.
French Bulldogs have very particular dietary needs due to their short-nosed snouts, making it important to find a dog food specifically tailored for brachycephalic dogs. Quality wet and dry food are both good options and high-fiber diets help with digestion. French Bulldogs can also benefit from a wide variety of vitamins and minerals to balance their diets. It's especially important to steer away from food containing high-fat and calorie contents as well as preservatives or artificial flavors. If you choose to feed your Frenchie table scraps, be sure to do so in moderation.
Preparing your home for your new French Bulldog should be a priority. To make your pup feel comfortable and safe, be sure to puppy-proof your house by picking up hazardous items like cords and small objects for your pup to choke on. Having the appropriate supplies, such as food and water dishes, a leash, and collar, can also make the transition into your home smoother. You should also have a safe and comfortable space ready for your pup to rest, like a dog bed or a blanket in a quiet corner.
French Bulldogs are not typically considered to be big dogs. Though they may appear large in size, they usually stand between 11 and 12 inches tall and weigh no more than 28 pounds. French Bulldogs are a small breed, and their short coats and muscular build often add to their powerful presence. While they may appear intimidating, they are actually devoted and loyal companions that can thrive as family pets. Despite their size, French Bulldogs are active and playful, and can get along with other animals as well.
French Bulldogs are lively dogs that are known for their playful nature and possessiveness of their owners. Despite their small size, they are capable of running, jumping, and playing for hours. French Bulldogs, however, are not known for their endurance. While they can be active, they tire quickly and can be easily over-stimulated. Generally, they need about 20 minutes of exercise each day to stay active and entertained. Even within these 20 minutes, they require short bursts of activity rather than long duration exercise sessions.
French Bulldogs are delightful companions, both loyal and entertaining making them great for families with children. Their size allows them to play safely and gently with younger kids, and their protective streak can be a comfort for parents with young children. They also have great temperaments they are even-tempered and adaptable to different situations and people. They don't require much exercise and are generally content with time spent indoors playing or simply just cuddling up for a nap.
Training a French Bulldog can be a rewarding, yet challenging, experience. The first step to successfully training a French Bulldog is to establish an early and consistent routine. For instance, at the same time each day, make sure to provide them with their necessary mental and physical stimulation. This can include walks, playing games, as well as teaching them to obey basic commands such as "sit" and "stay". As you begin to command your dog, make sure to reward them with praise or treats whenever they follow the order this will make them more likely to listen and do as you ask.
