Questions & Answers
A French Bulldog, also known as a “Frenchie”, is a breed of small companion dog that originated in France. They are part of the non-sporting group of breeds and are the result of a cross between a Toy Bulldog and a local French terrier. Frenchies are known for their friendly personalities, muscular body, unique bat ears, and wide-set eyes. They are easily recognizable and come in a few different colors. French Bulldogs generally weigh under 28 pounds and are about 11 inches tall.
French Bulldogs typically do not shed like other breeds. They typically have a single coat, which means that they do not have an undercoat, which is necessary for heavier shedding. While they do not shed heavily, French Bulldog pet owners still need to periodically brush their Frenchie's coat to remove dead hair and dirt and help with the natural oil production of their coats. Frenchies require regular bathing in warm water to help reduce their maintenance grooming as well as trimming their nails and cleaning their ears. Ultimately, regular brushing of the Frenchie's coat is essential for keeping shedding to a minimum.
French Bulldogs have sensitive stomachs, so it is important to feed them a diet appropriate for their size and breed. Generally, it is best to avoid feeding your French Bulldog human foods, table scraps, and any food that is not specifically designed for dogs. Foods to avoid giving French Bulldogs include sweets, chocolates, alcohol, foods containing artificial sweeteners, items high in sugar, raw eggs/meat, onion and garlic, raw dough, grapes/raisins, and certain nuts, such as macadamia nuts.
Preparing your home for your new French Bulldog is important. Start by puppy-proofing any potential hazards like dangling cords or anything fragile. Move anything they could swallow to higher shelves and remove all cleaning products from accessible areas. Create a comfortable place for your pup to rest with a bed or crate. Make sure they have plenty of toys for stimulation and chewing. Frenchies need exercise, so look for large spaces to play in where you can monitor your pup to make sure they don't escape. Lastly, start taking them for walk to get them used to the outdoors.
French Bulldogs come in a variety of sizes ranging from 11 to 14 inches tall when measured from the shoulder and can weigh anywhere between 12 to 28 pounds. The AKC breed standard lists the ideal weight range for both males and females at 18 to 28 pounds along with a height range of 11 to 13 inches, however both ranges will have some variation. Since the size of a French Bulldog largely depends on the size of their parents, it's best to purchase from a reputable breeder that can provide specific information on the size, health, and temperament of the pup.
French Bulldogs typically need about 30 minutes of exercise a day. This exercise should include some type of play, walks, or other activities that can keep your French Bulldog's body and mind active. A good idea is to split the exercise into two or three shorter sessions throughout the day. Make sure to provide a safe environment for your pup and keep any objects that could be harmful to them out of the way. Furthermore, only allow them to explore outside when you are present to ensure any risks are avoided.
French Bulldogs are generally considered to be excellent family pets because of their gentle and easy-going nature. When raising a French Bulldog in a family with children, it is important to remember that they need to socialize with both children and adults from an early age. If properly socialized, French Bulldogs can make wonderful family pets that get along with kids. Not only do they have a friendly, loving disposition, but they tend to be exceptionally tolerant and eager to please. With a calm and patient temperament, French Bulldogs can learn obedience training and commands easily.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training French Bulldogs will vary depending on the individual dog, their prior experience with being trained, and your overall goals. On average, you should plan to spend between 15 minutes and 1 hour per day working with your pup. This will include activities such as teaching commands, walking, reward-based exercises, and problem-solving scenarios. A good starting point is to plan for 30 minutes to 1 hour of training each day, but take into account your pup's unique needs and revise your plans accordingly.
