Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, or Frenchie, belong to the non-sporting group of dogs, which is part of the American Kennel Club (AKC) categorization. They have a unique look and are recognized for their distinctly deviated skulls as well as their short muzzles, round faces, and low-hanging jowls. Their large, bat-like ears are also one of their most defining characteristics. French Bulldogs are low-key and friendly animals, often living happily with children and displaying their loyalty and affection with their gentle dispositions.
French Bulldogs, although often considered to be a hypoallergenic breed, are not technically hypoallergenic. French Bulls have a heavy coat that requires routine grooming and regular baths to keep shedding to a minimum. As with any breed, a small number of people may still have an allergic reaction to French Bulldogs, so it is always best to spend time with the breed before committing to adoption or ownership to determine if there is an allergic reaction.
French Bulldogs need a balanced diet ideally made up of high-quality, specially-formulated dry dog food that meets their specific nutritional needs. The ingredients should consist of protein sources like turkey, lamb, chicken, or a beef/fish blend. Look for foods that contain wholesome carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, and oats. A variety of fruits and vegetables provide desired vitamins and minerals. Glucosamine and chondroitin are important for joint health. Avoid foods with artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.
French Bulldogs do have some special requirements to keep in mind. First off, they need quite a bit of care and attention, since they are a brachycephalic breed. This means they need to stay cool, they don't adapt easily to extreme temperatures, and they must be monitored while outside in hot weather, since they can easily overheat. Their shorter snouts also mean they can snore and have respiratory issues, so monitoring this is important. Generally, they should not be exercised too heavily in hot or humid weather, or for hours at a time.
It's hard to predict exactly how big your French Bulldog puppy will be when they reach maturity. Generally, these dogs will be between 11-13 inches tall, and weigh between 16-28 pounds. The size of a French Bulldog puppy when they reach full size can vary depending on their parentage and genetics, with some dogs being smaller or larger than average. If you are concerned about the size of your pup, proper nutrition and regular exercise are essential for providing a healthy lifestyle that will contribute to your pup's ideal adult size.
While French Bulldogs can be quite active, running with them is not recommended due to the breed's brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome, or BAOS. This condition causes difficulty breathing and can be exacerbated by exercise and heat. Therefore, it is best to keep running to a minimum or keep it short and limited to cool days. When walking, use a harness to avoid putting direct pressure on their neck and take frequent breaks to give them lots of water. Instead of running, consider taking them on a brisk walk for exercise, perhaps even in an area that provides plenty of interesting smells.
French Bulldogs have the potential to get along with other pets, but a few factors should be taken into consideration before introducing them to a household of animals. With consistent and positive reinforcement as well as an understanding of the individual personalities of the French Bulldog and the other pet, the animals can co-exist peacefully. Depending on the pet, if they are small, some territorial behavior may need to be addressed, as the French Bulldog may be inclined to guard its territory. However, with training and vigilance, these two animals could learn to live harmoniously in the same home.
It depends on the age and activity level of your French Bulldog as well as your goals for their training. Generally, young puppies will need short periods of training several times a day while older dogs may benefit from more focused sessions of 20 to 40 minutes once or twice a day. The type of activities you engage in will also influence the duration. For example, basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay' may only require 5 to 10 minutes while more complex activities like agility courses may take up to 45 minutes.
