Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs have an interesting history. They originated from a cross between English Bulldogs and various other small-size breeds from France such as the Pug. They may look intimidating, but they are actually very affectionate and intelligent dogs that make fantastic companions. Fun fact: The French Bulldog is referred to as a "Frenchie" and is the 10th most popular breed in America. They love attention, and will often snore, or snort when they're tired. They are also lighter sleepers, which makes them super alert and protective of their families.
French Bulldogs are not hypoallergenic but may be a good choice for some allergy sufferers. While they do have a short, smooth coat, they do still shed which can produce allergens. Additionally, their flat faces can produce higher levels of the protein coursin that is found in dander and saliva and can be a cause of allergic reactions. That said, many people who have allergies to other dog breeds can tolerate French Bulldogs better given their low to moderate shedding habits.
French Bulldogs have different dietary needs than some other breeds of dog. They are generally considered a small breed so their caloric intake should be monitored accordingly. Since they are a brachycephalic breed, they may have difficulty digesting some foods. They should be fed nutrient-rich, high-quality food. In addition, due to their tendency to overeat, they should be fed with smaller meals throughout the day. Small breeds of dogs like French Bulldogs also need more protein and phosphorus than other breeds as these help support their bone and joint health.
A French Bulldog is an incredibly charming and endearing breed, but they do come with a few special needs. Before bringing your new pup home, make sure to have the following items prepared and ready: a bag of premium food specifically designed for French Bulldogs, a comfortable, well-ventilated crate or kennel, a collar, harness, and leash, a few different toys, some puppy training pads, and chews or treats to help with teething and potential separation anxiety.
French Bulldogs generally reach an adult size of 11 to 14 inches at the shoulder and tend to range between 16 to 28 pounds in weight. Their small size makes them great house pets and they are well suited for apartments or smaller homes. They may appear to be stocky and heavy, however, they are surprisingly agile and can move with quickness and grace. The condition of the French Bulldog's coat can make them appear larger than they truly are. An average life span for a French Bulldog is 10-12 years, making them a good long-term companion.
French Bulldogs are a unique breed of dog; they may not be as enthusiastic about swimming as other breeds, but they are definitely capable of swimming. Although French Bulldogs can learn to swim and enjoy the water with the proper preparation and supervision, it is important to note that this is not their natural preference. Many Frenchies are content to be a poolside partner rather than a swimmer and will most likely require the aid of a canine life vest to keep them afloat. As they can be prone to overheating, it is wise to limit their time in the water.
Absolutely! French Bulldogs are gentle and affectionate dogs that make incredible family pets. Not only are they loyal and protective companions, but they have the extra benefit of rarely getting too rambunctious and being patient with younger audiences. What's more, these pups have a lovable, distinctive look that make them an attractive addition to any family. They even have friendly personalities, so they're sure to quickly become an adored member of the family. All of these qualities make French Bulldogs excellent additions to households with children of all ages.
Training your French Bulldog can be a rewarding experience if done properly. To begin, ensure that your pup is accustomed to its environment and comfortable. Start by introducing your pup to basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "down." To reinforce these commands, use treats or other forms of positive reinforcement, such as mental and/or physical praise. As your pup progresses, gradually increase difficulty by introducing distractions or by adding one or two more commands to the basic training session.
