Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are an adorable, playful breed that can be seen strutting down the street today. These pups are known for their short snouts, square faces, big eyes, and folded ears. French Bulldogs are originally from England, where they were used to play a game called "Bull Baiting" in the 1800s. Although the game is no longer played, Frenchies love to play! They are also great family pets because of their gentle demeanor and loyalty. Since they don't need a lot of exercise, they are perfect for small spaces.
French Bulldogs do shed, but less than other breeds because of the length of their coats. Unlike most breeds, their coats do not grow much and the double-layer keeps the fur from matting. As for the shedding, they are relative low shedders compared to other breeds and require little grooming, which makes them quite popular amongst pet owners. However, their long coats will still need brushing and routine trimmings so as to keep their fur healthy and looking tidy. That being said, regular brushing and maintenance of the coat helps to minimize the amount of hair shed by French Bulldogs.
French Bulldogs do have some dietary needs that should be taken into consideration. Specifically, their short muzzles make it difficult for them to take in large amounts of food, so they need to be fed smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. Additionally, they should be given a diet that is low in fat and high in fiber to avoid obesity, as this breed is more prone to weight gain than other dogs. As with all breeds, regular veterinary check ups and any vaccines or preventive treatments should be kept up-to-date.
Before getting a French Bulldog, it is important to have all the essentials you need to give them the care and home they deserve. First and foremost, a quality food that meets all your pup's nutritional needs, then bowls for food and water, a collar with an ID tag, a comfortable bed, grooming tools, toys, a crate, potty train pads or grass litter boxes, treats, and training aids.
French Bulldogs generally remain quite small, ranging in height from 11 to 12 inches when standing on all fours. They typically weigh just 20 to 28 pounds and have stockier builds than other types of Bulldogs. However, some specimens can reach up to 30 pounds or more. Frenchies have compact, wide-set bodies and stout, muscular legs which can form an evenly balanced silhouette. While a French Bulldog may not reach the same shoulder height as many other breeds, they are still quite large when compared to the smallest lapdogs.
French Bulldogs are indeed a very active breed of dog! They adore regular exercise and daily playtime, morphing into bundles of joy when given chances to run and jump about. Some of their favorite activities to engage in include playing catch, going on long walks or hikes, and learning new tricks. Due to their short snouts, however, it’s important to pay particular attention to their breathing, ensuring they do not overexert themselves even during periods of light activity.
French Bulldogs generally get along great with kids, as long as they've received good socialization before being placed in the home. French Bulldogs are loyal, affectionate, and gentle by nature, making them an ideal choice if you have children. They tend to get along well with children of all ages, as long as proper introductions and handling methods are introduced. French Bulldogs are relatively patient dogs and possess a playful nature that makes them incredibly appealing to children.
Training your French Bulldog starts with consistency and setting limits. Take the time to understand your pup's strengths and weaknesses and use rewards-based techniques to get them accustomed to following commands. Begin by presenting simple puzzles, teaching key words and commands, and using “clicker training” to positively reinforce desirable behaviors. This involves clicking a small handheld device when they complete the task correctly and then providing a reward. You should also use positive reinforcement when teaching them to become familiar and socialize with other pets and people. However, be sure to keep the training relatively short and maintain a consistent routine.
