Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, usually referred to as "Frenchies," are a small-sized breed of domestic dogs. They are part of the “brachycephalic” (or short-faced) group, which also includes other popular breeds such as the Bulldog and the Boston Terrier. French Bulldogs have a unique shape and presence that gives them appeal to both dog owners and non-owners alike. They are known for their friendly characters, loyalty, and intelligence—all qualities that make them very popular companions.
French Bulldogs may be considered a low-shedding breed, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're non-shedding. French Bulldogs do shed, but they usually don't shed as much as other breeds. French Bulldogs usually have a fine, short coat that doesn't require a lot of grooming or upkeep, but it may still cause some shedding. To help minimize shedding, it's best to brush your pet frequently and keep up with regular grooming appointments.
French Bulldogs are relatively small and active dogs that require a well-rounded diet. Because of their size, careful consideration should be taken when selecting their food. Owners should look for a food with quality ingredients that are easily digestible. It should also contain a good mix of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to ensure the best health and nutrition for your pup. Be sure to avoid foods with artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives, as these are not beneficial for your pup.
French bulldogs are known to be relatively low-maintenance pets; however, they do have some specific needs. Since Frenchies are brachycephalic (they have a “flattened” face), they are prone to breathing problems, making overexertion a concern. To ensure your Frenchie remains healthy, limit the amount of physical activity he does, and provide sufficient rest. Also due to their compact size, they are more prone to back and hip issues; so, pet parents should pay attention to their Frenchie’s weight.
Most adult French Bulldogs generally grow to between 11-14 inches in height and 18-28 pounds in weight. Depending on their parents, they may lean more towards the upper end of that range, and males are usually larger than females. All French Bulldog sizes are considered small, and they are categorized as a companion breed. However, they can still have plenty of energy and require regular exercise.
It is possible to take French Bulldogs running, however, it is not recommended due to the fact that they do not have a build that is well-suited to running. French Bulldogs are generally better suited to short bursts of activity or short walks. Like most dogs, allowing them to run in short spurts along your walks is ok as long as they are kept cool. It is also important to note that running should not take place in extremely hot weather, as this can lead to respiratory problems, heat exhaustion, or other health issues.
French Bulldogs can be excellent companions for children of all ages due to their temperate and loving nature. French Bulldogs are typically very patient and loyal to their owners, which makes them great around young kids. French Bulldogs tend to be exceptionally companionable and are eager to please, which contributes to the development of an affectionate bond with their owners. French Bulldogs also make great playmates and watchful guardians for children, as they love to snuggle, romp around, and protect their family, making them an ideal choice for households with kids.
French Bulldog training is quite an undertaking but a worthwhile one for both you and your pup. Depending on the age and training level of your French Bulldog, the amount of time can vary quite a bit, but a good rule of thumb is to set aside at least 15-30 minutes per day for basic training. If your pup is still a puppy, you may need to increase your time commitment to 45-60 minutes per day as puppies can benefit from longer and more frequent training sessions.
