One of the most interesting things about French Bulldogs is their extraordinary personality. They are very affectionate and have a strong attachment to their humans. They love to be the center of attention and are full of energy and playfulness. They are also quite intelligent and capable of learning all kinds of tricks. And, as a bonus, they don't require much grooming or exercise, making them an ideal pet for those with busy lifestyles. French Bulldogs are also relatively healthy overall, with only a few potential health issues to watch out for.
French Bulldogs are a low-shedding breed of dog. Although they don't shed as much as some other breeds, they do still shed and require regular grooming to keep their coats healthy and free of mats and build-up. Despite their short coats, they're still prone to developing dander which can be an allergen for some people so it's important to vacuum and dust regularly to keep your home free of allergens. A brush once or twice a week should be enough to keep their coats healthy and ward off any shedding or dander.
French Bulldogs are active and responsive little dogs that can be fed a variety of foods, however, it is important to avoid certain items that may be toxic or dangerous for these breeds. Foods that should not be given to French Bulldogs include items high in fat, such as cooked bones and animal fat; processed treats, like pig ears; grapes and raisins; chocolate; and avocados, which can make them sick. Human foods such as garlic, onions, chillies and caffeine should also be avoided, as they are harmful and difficult for French Bulldogs to digest.
To ensure your French Bulldog has a comfortable and safe home, it's important to plan ahead. Make sure the space is puppy-proof by checking the yard for sharp objects, covering plants that may be toxic, and installing a secure fence, if needed. You can also secure dangerous areas of the house with baby gates to prevent your pup from accessing areas that could be hazardous. Set up a comfortable space for your pup with a bed, their own toys, and an area for potty training.
French Bulldogs come in a range of sizes depending on their lineage. The size of a full-grown French Bulldog is typically between 11 to 13 inches in height and weigh no more than 28 pounds. The average should be closer to 16 pounds, measured at the withers (back of neck) at the age of 12 months. They can also come in smaller sizes due to mixed heritage which can give rise to what are called 'teacup French Bulldog' or 'mini French Bulldog' and these should weigh no bigger than 14 pounds.
French Bulldogs generally enjoy splashing and paddling in water, but their body shape and relatively short legs can make them less than ideal swimmers. Their faces are more prone to sinking than other, taller-legged dog breeds, and swimming can be a tiring activity for them. With that said, many pet owners report that their French Bulldogs still like to take a dip now and then. An excellent swim safety precaution for your Frenchie is to secure a life vest when they wade in water that's too deep for them.
