Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs, also affectionately known as "Frenchie," are classified as a companion or Toy breed. These dogs have a characteristic bat-like appearance, with large, wide-set eyes, large rounded ears, and a snub nose. French Bulldogs are generally quite friendly, and alert and can make wonderful family companions. They're also adaptable, and if well-socialized can get along well with people and other animals. Many are highly enthusiastic, thriving on companionship, play, and exercise.
French Bulldogs, while seeming like they should be hypoallergenic because of their short fur, are not typically considered hypoallergenic. This is because even short-haired dogs can produce allergens in their saliva, which gets transferred to their fur when they groom themselves. In fact, French Bulldogs tend to have more of an odor than other breeds, as their short coats don't allow the natural oils from their skin to dry properly leading to more of those allergens lingering.
French Bulldogs should not be given foods containing high amounts of fat, as well as foods with ingredients which are difficult to digest, such as onions, chives, garlic, raisins, grapes, and any kind of sweets. Foods like chocolate, coffee and alcoholic beverages are also not advisable for consumption by French Bulldogs due to their adverse health effects. Furthermore, French Bulldogs should avoid being fed table scraps or people-food as most of these are generally not balanced or nutritionally adequate for the breed's specific needs and can also lead to undesirable behaviors such as scavenging and begging.
Preparing for a new French Bulldog can be both exciting and overwhelming. There are a few things you'll need to do to get ready for when they come home. Start by doing some research read up on health, dietary and other information about your new breed. Make sure you have the appropriate food, bedding and toys as well. Even better if you can find out your French Bulldog's likes and dislikes prior to their arrival too! You'll also need to puppy proof your home, making sure there are no hazardous items or objects that your pup could potentially injure themselves on.
French Bulldogs are a compact breed and typically grow to an average of about twelve to fourteen inches tall and twenty to twenty-eight pounds when fully grown. They usually reach their full physical size at around eighteen months of age, but they’ll continue to mature and build muscle mass and body composition until they are about two to three years old. French Bulldogs tend to have a broad, stocky build compared to some other breeds of the same size.
French Bulldogs likely enjoy swimming, just like any other four-legged breed. However, due to their short snouts and barrel chests, they may have more difficulty with water related activities than some other breeds. With the correct supervision and knowledge, they can still safely partake in aquatic activities. Before attempting any swimming, Frenchies should have a vet checkup and some water-time practice to acclimatize them. Additionally, life jackets are very important for Bullies in water, as their short stature limits their ability to swim with ease.
French Bulldogs are historically known for being a calm breed with quite an agreeable disposition. Generally, they do get along with other pets and are highly adaptable to their environment. This includes cats, dogs, and small creatures. While every pet is different and interactions should be monitored, French Bulldogs often display loving behavior towards their other furry friends and can often learn social cues from them. That being said, making sure your pets are properly introduced is important, and can often help ensure that everyone gets along peacefully.
Training a French Bulldog is a unique and rewarding process. It is important to keep in mind that while some factors such as intelligence and a willingness to please come easier with some dogs, most breeds can be trained with patience and positive reinforcement. With French Bulldogs, a patient and consistent owner is a key to successful training. It is usually a good practice to start training as soon as possible, as puppies can pick up on commands and commands quicker than older dogs. French Bulldogs respond best to reward-based training, so it is important to provide positive feedback anytime a command is met with success.
