Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about French Bulldogs is that they are extremely affectionate and loyal to their owners. They are known for their even-tempered and laid back nature, yet still incredibly adaptable companions and do well in most households. They are an ideal choice for small living spaces because of their small size, and they require only moderate exercise needs. French Bulldogs have a unique attribute: their bat-like ears, which makes them truly one-of-a-kind. Additionally, they have an endearing and inquisitive face that is simply irresistible.
French Bulldogs are not considered to be non-shedding dogs. While they normally don't shed heavily, they do shed allergens like other breeds and so owners should be aware that they will need to groom and maintain their coats to keep it clean. French Bulldogs have a single coat yet it's thick and can be very fast growing. Regular brushing helps to minimize the shedding of the coat and also encourages good hair growth. The coat also tends to matt, so avoiding this is best carried out with regular grooming sessions.
French Bulldogs should not be fed high-fat foods, as this can contribute to obesity and other health concerns. Avoid giving the breed table scraps, as these can be too rich and may contain ingredients like onion and garlic which can be toxic. Rawhide bones and other chews are also not recommended, as they may cause digestive problems. Most importantly, any dog food should be approved by your veterinarian. Be aware that French Bulldogs are prone to allergies, so avoid feeding any food that includes ingredients that may be allergenic, such as corn, wheat, or soy.
Before getting a French Bulldog, it is recommended that you have a few essentials on hand. This should include a dog bed, puppy food, crate/pen, collar and leash, toys, food bowl, grooming supplies, and a good quality and reliable veterinarian. It's also important to plan for any preventative treatments like flea/tick prevention and heartworm medication. It would also be wise to invest in some training tools such as training treats and a clicker. Furthermore, consider doggy gates or any additional items that may be needed to ensure the puppy's safety.
French Bulldogs are not necessarily considered "big dogs" compared to other breeds, like Great Danes. They are, however, relatively stocky little pooches with a heavier build than a typical small dog breed. French Bulldogs typically weigh between 16 to 28 pounds and stand at 11 to 12 inches tall. Though considered a small breed, they are slightly larger than other small breeds like Chihuahuas or Yorkshire Terriers. Additionally, their bat-like ears and large, soulful eyes give them a unique and slightly larger-than-life look.
French Bulldogs are considered a relatively low-energy breed; however, they still require a regular routine of physical activity. As such, French Bulldogs should be taken on a daily walk (weather permitting) of at least 30 minutes that includes brisk walking, jogging, or playing fetch. In addition to the daily walk, doggie games like tug-of-war, hide-and-seek, and agility courses are great ways to keep your French Bulldog physically and mentally fit. French Bulldogs should also have access to a secure outdoor space where they can explore and safely burn off additional energy.
French Bulldogs typically get along with other pets if they have been socialized and introduced to them when young. However, Frenchies can be territorial and it may be necessary to supervise them with other animals initially. With a proper introduction and socialization, the likelihood of the Furrbaby getting along with other pets increases. As always, patience and consistency are key in giving the pup time to become comfortable with its new surroundings. With time, patience, and proper socialization, French Bulldogs can make wonderful companions for other furry family members.
Training a French Bulldog can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but it is important to note that, like with any breed, it is not always easy. Depending on the pup's age, experience level, and temperament, it may require more effort than others. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, though, a French Bulldog can learn good behaviors and habits. Regular practice is important too, so that they can remember what works and learn any new commands necessary. As long as every family member is willing to commit to it, any French Bulldog can learn the basics of obedience.
